Emery won't shift blame to men for Wolves debacle
LONDON • Unai Emery refused to give up on Arsenal's Champions League qualification hopes after seeing his men embarrassed by Wolves in a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux on Wednesday.
Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota all scored in the first half to condemn the Gunners to a third defeat in four games, severely denting their hopes of a top-four finish with just three games to go.
While the Arsenal manager Emery admitted that his fifth-placed team (66 points) were outplayed, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos netting a consolation, he insisted they would continue to fight for Champions League football next season. They are in a battle with Tottenham (70 points), Chelsea (67) and Manchester United (64) for two spots in Europe's top club competition.
After their seventh away loss, with just a clean sheet this term, he was asked whether he would have harsh words with his players.
He said: "I am usually very critical with myself and I am angry with myself that we didn't do the game plan, (but) not with the players.
"First, it is with me and after that, my style and idea is to look in front and find a solution, not who is the player who is worst.
"The solution for me is... on Sunday at Leicester, (we) get our best performance and the best possibility to take the three points."
Wolves, who are seventh and remain on course for their best finish since their sixth place in 1980, were clinical in their finishing.
But Arsenal's wounds were also to a large extent self-inflicted - no thanks to careless passing, brittle defending and an erratic display of goalkeeping from Bernd Leno, who was culpable for the hosts' second and third goals.
Emery refused to criticise his No. 1, adding: "I don't want to speak individually about the players. We need to recover our confidence."
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

Unai Emery says he was happy with how Arsenal were implementing his game plan before the red card which saw Ainsley Maitland-Niles dismissed and reduced the Gunners to 10 men. The Spaniard explained that the idea was to control the match with good defensive positioning, but by the time the right back was sent off, Leicester had had 8 attempts

Emery still has made a big mistake from the start and she should be blame for his lineup though. You cannot start Mustafi, Mavropanos, Jenkinson, Elneny, Guendouzi, at the same time, and NOT expect repercussions. I understand the need for rotation, but that was too many changes, and such a lack of quality coming in.
Emery: We started very well but the red card changed

Time to be honest and rightfully apportion blame for Arsenal

There is one massive reason Arsenal got thrashed last night in the Europa League final against Chelsea and that is the manager Unai Emery. Now, I will say straight up I am not calling for him to be sacked or anything like that and I do believe that he needs at least one more season to try and build the team in his image but neither will I make any more excuses for him.

I couldn't stop laughing at their debacle yesterday. I was tired of pundits and so called expert puting all the blame on Emery while praising Tuchel even though his personnal record isn't as good as Unai's. He isn't PSG coach anymore and they couldn't stop criticizing him.

Football: Frankfurt oust Benfica to reach Europa League last four

FRANKFURT, Germany (REUTERS) - Eintracht Frankfurt beat Benfica 2-0 on Thursday (April 18) to overturn a 4-2 first leg deficit and advance to the Europa League last four on the away goal rule for their first European semi-final appearance in 39 years.
Goals from Filip Kostic and Sebastian Rode were enough to put them through and they will next face Chelsea, who beat Slavia Prague.
Eintracht, German Cup winners last season, reached their first semi-final in a European competition since winning the UEFA Cup back in 1980 by punishing their opponents' passive approach.
The Portuguese, finalists in 2013 and 2014, were largely toothless, content to sit back and soak up the pressure but with little to show for up front until after Eintracht's second goal in the 67th minute.
"The whole team did it great and it was not easy," said match winner Rode.
"We promised ourselves to come out fighting and to soak up the atmosphere. The fans pushed us. We are delighted to have advanced."
Benfica initially did well to keep Frankfurt's attack at bay.
They could do nothing though when unmarked Filip Kostic fired in on the rebound after Mijat Gacinovic's effort bounced off the post in the 37th.
The German club, one of four former winners of the trophy in this season's quarter-finals, along with Chelsea, Napoli and Valencia, needed only one more goal to advance to the last four.
However, it was Benfica's first leg hat-trick hero Joao Felix who came close in the 48th minute. He shook off two markers, cut back into the box from the left but his effort was deflected narrowly wide by Frankfurt defender Simon Falette.
That was to be the visitors' only real chance and Rode settled the tie for the hosts when he drilled in from the edge of the box.
Benfica hit the post in the 85th but could not find the goal that would send them through.

Football: Thailand axe Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac after Asian Cup horror show in 4-1 loss to India

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Thailand have fired coach Milovan Rajevac following a humiliating 4-1 thrashing by India in their opening Asian Cup football game at the weekend.
The 65-year-old Serb, who took charge of Thailand in 2017, paid the price after the War Elephants conceded three second-half goals to slump to a shock defeat in Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Jan 6).
Thai football chiefs took a dim view of their Group A flop and acted swiftly to remove Rajevac the morning after.
"The result is not what is expected of the Thai national team and that our supporters deserve," Thailand's FA president Somyot Poompanmoung said.
"Like all Thai football fans across the country, I am also disappointed with the result. But as president of the football association, I cannot stand still with this problem."
Former assistant coach Sirisak Yodyardthai will assume control of the team when they face Bahrain on Jan 10 and hosts United Arab Emirates on Jan 14, Thai officials added.
Rajevac, who has had spells in charge of Algeria and Qatar, famously steered Ghana to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup where they were beaten on penalties by Uruguay.
But he was left shell-shocked by Thailand's horror show against underdogs India, whose veteran striker Sunil Chhetri scored twice, overtaking Lionel Messi's 65 international goals in the process.
Lamenting his side's abject display, Rajevac admitted that India were worthy winners.
"They were phenomenal - they ran more, were more aggressive and wanted it more," he said.
"They absolutely deserved to win. But we underperformed, especially in the second half."
Rajevic has been criticised for his defensive style but the Serb clearly felt otherwise after watching Thailand over-run by a hungry India side.
"It's not always about technical ability and skill on the ball," he said. "We lacked power, strength and aggression. We need to put more pressure on the ball and show more passion."
Thailand, appearing for the first time in the Finals since co-hosting the Asian Cup in 2007, have now won just one of 21 games at the continent's showcase competition.
Cricket-mad India find themselves as unlikely leaders of Group A thanks to their first Asian Cup win in 55 years.
The Emiratis were held 1-1 by Bahrain in Saturday's curtain-raiser.

They'll need every part of the side to be in form to emerge with two positive results and Mane can be key to any success thanks to being on top of his own game, says the boss. Indeed, Klopp

Albirex coach refuses to panic

Albirex coach refuses to panic

SINGAPORE PREMIER LEAGUE

Albirex Niigata 0
Brunei DPMM 0

Albirex Niigata, of all Singapore Premier League teams, should know the importance of momentum.
After all, they won their first 17 games last season and scored in all 24 matches to complete their hat-trick of league titles.
This season, however, they have yet to score after three competitive games after being held 0-0 by 10-man Brunei DPMM at the Jurong East Stadium last night.
The consolation was that it was their first league point of the season.
Albirex also failed to score in the Community Shield against Home United, who won on penalties, and in their 1-0 loss to Geylang International in the league opener.
After seeing his side extend their barren run and occupy sixth spot with one point in two games, Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi acknowledged that the psychological importance of getting off the mark, but trusted his players to make the breakthrough.
The 39-year-old Japanese said: "Maybe our players are too young and inexperienced, they are too anxious to score.
"We will continue working with them and train them until it becomes second nature for them to be more composed and not rush things. We will also work harder to improve our accuracy."
As DPMM coach Adrian Pennock will attest to, Albirex are not a bad team.
Kyoga Nakamura is an intelligent playmaker and pulls the strings in the final third and Daizo Horikoshi is a dynamic attacker who creates problems with his direct runs.
DPMM's Najib Tarif was in knots last night and had to resort to fouling Horikoshi to stop the tricky midfielder and was sent off after two yellow cards.
However, Albirex lacked the cutting edge in front of goal, flashing shots wide instead of troubling goalkeeper Wardun Yussof, who was tested only by Kaishu Yamazaki's free kick in the second half.
Their Plan B also failed; the 2.05m striker Makito Hatanaka was brought on, but teammates failed to find him with their crosses.
Pennock was all smiles despite seeing Andrei Varankou squander a counter-attack by shooting straight at Kengo Fukudome in the 79th minute. DPMM's perfect start may have been halted, but his team are top with seven points and three clean sheets from three games.
He said: "We want to entertain, score goals and win games but, sometimes, we have to play ugly and get a very good result, and that was today.
"We went for the physical approach because Albirex are a very good side, especially when they play here on artificial turf where they haven't lost since 2015.
"We deserved the red card, but the character of our squad has been first-class, and I'm very proud of my players.
"It is still early in the season and we have not played every team yet, but we would love to be up there for the title race, why not?"

They had already spent about $2,000 each for flights and accommodation, and were planning to try their luck with scalpers for the Champions League final tickets in Madrid.
Dinesh Kumar, a 34-year-old Liverpool fan, and his 62-year-old Tottenham-supporting father Dewadas Vellasamy, were willing to pay about $6,000 each but were quoted almost $10,000 each and decided to pass.
Yet the duo, who were part of a group of 20 Singaporeans who had made their way to the Spanish capital last week, still had the time of their lives on Saturday with the football festivities that unfolded outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to lift their sixth European Cup.
Dinesh, who works in the oil and gas industry, told The Straits Times: "It was hot and humid and we were surprised the Liverpool fan zone at Plaza Felipe II had no live screening. We were directed to bars, but they were fully booked and the commentary was in Spanish.
"In the end, we found an Indian bistro which was willing to let us to make a booking and watch the game. Fans from Hong Kong, Australia, Egypt, Malaysia, India and England started streaming in.
"There were so many fans like us who did not have tickets, but we ended up having a crazy party.
"At the final whistle, we were in tears because some of us went to Kiev last year when Liverpool lost and this felt like consolation.
"We went to the fan zone again where people gathered and celebrated with song and dance until 6am."
Dewadas, a retiree who has supported Tottenham since 1974, added: "Naturally, we Spurs fans are quite disappointed. I feel Liverpool won by luck because of the penalty and Alisson's saves.
"But I'm also very happy to be part of history with Tottenham's first Champions League final and witness in person what fans are willing to do for the love of their clubs."
Aaron Kok, a Liverpool fan who runs The Experiences Firm that took 11 fans to Madrid, was impressed by the respect both sets of fans showed despite the intense rivalry.
The 42-year-old said: "Spurs fans deserve huge credit. Visibly fewer in numbers, they were still great sport and created insane noise and atmosphere. They were respectful with friendly banter which should be how all sports fans should behave regardless of the team we support."
He and two other Liverpool fans left their hotel at 4am yesterday to begin a 12-hour commute by plane and car to Merseyside via Rome and London for the trophy parade.
Kok said: "This trip to Liverpool is really quite illogical as there was no guarantee of victory and we could have gone to a very sad city. But life has to be lived through the heart as much as the brain."
Meanwhile, fans in Singapore had various options to follow Saturday's action, including at the Osim Sundown Marathon, where around 300 people gathered to watch the live telecast on a big screen at the runners' village.
After completing the half-marathon in a black Liverpool kit, Eddy Chua, a 22-year-old national serviceman, said: "There was a very lively atmosphere. Even though we were all tired after the run, we kept the atmosphere going.
"I was there alone, but it felt like I was there with friends as we were in it together, cheering for our team when Liverpool scored.
"I supported Liverpool only since 2006 and, from that time on, our only major trophy was the League Cup in 2012. But the Champions League win was our moment to tell the world that this is our time."
Tottenham fan Raama Subramaniyam, a 42-year-old who was also clad in his Spurs jersey, added: "I like the set-up of the live screening, it was well organised and the sound system was good. I just wish I had more friends and Spurs fans around me.
"It was quite a boring game, to be honest. The three-week break after the last Premier League game caused both teams' form to drop and they were both so cautious.
"Spurs attacked in the second half, but didn't convert (their chances), so hard luck to them and congratulations to Liverpool."
