City must beat Liverpool to stay in title race: Guardiola

LONDON â€¢ Win or bust. That was the stark message from Pep Guardiola to his Manchester City players, that failure to beat Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday would effectively end their title tilt.
The Premier League champions revived their bid to retain their title with a 3-1 win at Southampton on Sunday that followed shock defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester.
City are still seven points behind leaders Liverpool and Guardiola knows his side have zero margin for error now, saying: "We knew it, that with the position of Liverpool, if we drop points, then it (the title race) is over.
"It would be almost impossible. Of course, they are going to drop points but not too many.
"If you want to be there as far as possible until the end, we have to remember what happened last season and this as well - apart from the last few days."
He was adamant he had not lost confidence in his side, despite the Palace and Leicester reverses.

SQUEAKY BUM TIME

"How can I doubt them?," said the Spaniard. "Football is like this. We make 30 exceptional minutes again, especially without the ball, we create chances to go 2-0 or 3-0, we concede one goal.
"Against Palace and Leicester, they were happy with 1-1 and they found a second one.
"I always judge our intentions of the game and always our intentions are to try."
But Guardiola also admitted the monumental task facing his side as they were facing "the best team in Europe or the world".
He added: "That's why it's a challenge for us (on) Thursday, to try and win and sustain this position as far as possible to arrive at the end of the season fighting for the title.
"We won a lot of games but unfortunately we lost two and we have a rival (Liverpool) who at the moment is the best."
City may again be without Kevin de Bruyne against Liverpool after he missed the Saints game with a muscle problem, but Guardiola rejected suggestions that their victory over Ralph Hasenhuttl's men had "sent a message" to the Reds.
He told reporters: "Liverpool know what they have to do, we know what we have to do (on) Thursday.
"Of course, it's important to win. It's almost a final for us and we want to be there as long as possible for the Premier League.
"I know the distance is big, seven points, especially because they're so solid and consistent, but we're at home.
"Hopefully our people at the Etihad can help, they can support us. Not just for the game, but these players deserve it. What they have done in the last 14 or 15 months, how they defend this club is incredible, it's massive."

LONDON â€¢ Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri's focus is solely on today's Premier League visit to Arsenal and not moves in the January transfer window, despite the increasing possibility the club will be adding Gonzalo Higuain to their ranks.
The striker is expected to complete a loan move from Juventus, with the Daily Mail reporting he arrived in London yesterday.
While the 31-year-old cannot feature at the Emirates as he was not registered in time, the Argentinian could possibly make his debut at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea taking on Tottenham in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final on Thursday.
Sarri previously coached Higuain at Napoli where he scored an Italian Serie A record of 36 goals in the 2015-16 season.
Although his stock has fallen this term with only eight goals in 22 appearances for AC Milan after being forced out on loan following Juventus' blockbuster signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, Sarri will be hopeful he can regain his scoring touch with a change of environment.
Olivier Giroud and Atletico Madrid-bound Alvaro Morata have scored a paltry six league goals between them this season, with Eden Hazard leading the way with 10.
Such has been the dearth of firepower at Stamford Bridge that Sarri has been compelled to press the Belgian into a "false nine" role despite him more used to starting out wide.

At his pre-match press conference yesterday, Sarri declined to be drawn on Higuain's imminent arrival, insisting that while he had made club director and chief transfer negotiator Marina Granovskaia aware of what his side needed, he "did not know" who was coming through the door.
The Italian told reporters: "I spoke with Marina two weeks ago, so Marina knows very well my opinion on how to improve the team.
"Then I decide to be focused on the pitch, on matches, on training.
"I don't call her every evening, otherwise, I spend all my mental energies on the market. It's better if I spend all my mental energies on the pitch."
Besides Higuain, compatriot Leandro Paredes has also been hotly linked as a replacement for midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who left earlier this month to join Monaco.

According to Sky Italia's Gianluca di Marzio, the French champions are attempting to hijack the deal and have reportedly tabled a â‚¬35 million (S$54 million) bid for the Zenit St Petersburg midfielder, who according to The Guardian, averages 7.6 accurate long balls per game and is known for his ability to switch play.

"Our tour to both Singapore and Shanghai will form an important part of the Pan-Asian life insurer's Centennial, with a 12-month programme of special events and activities across its 18 markets in the region having commenced in January.
"The visit also affords the club the opportunity to engage with our millions of fans across Asia including Official Supporters Clubs in both countries in which we will be playing fixtures."

The announcement virtually confirms Spurs will be one of the four teams competing in the International Champions Cup at the National Stadium in July.
Last week, The Straits Times reported that English Premier League clubs Manchester United and Tottenham are all but confirmed for the visit and negotiations are ongoing to add Italy's Juventus and Inter Milan to the line-up.
It is understood that the ICC is set to take place here over the July 19-21 weekend and will feature four teams - one more than in the last two years. But there will be just two games instead of the previous three.
Although the fixtures will be confirmed only on March 27, the new arrangement means the four teams do not need to take a break between matches and the weekend scheduling should attract more fans to the National Stadium.
While Spurs last visited Singapore in 1995, when they lost 4-2 to the Lions on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation, tours to Asia are not new to them. They were in Beijing for the 2009 Premier League Asia Trophy and Hong Kong for the 2013 edition. They also played in Malaysia in 2015, as well as Hong Kong in 2017.
Spurs fan Fabius Chen, a 33-year-old public servant, said: "I was there as a kid in 1995 and it was the first time I watched them in person. My favourite player at the time was Darren Anderton and I have never forgotten Singapore goalkeeper David Lee saving his spot-kick in the shootout.
"I'll be there again in July because as a fan from Singapore, chances to see the team live are few and far between.
"I hope manager Mauricio Pochettino and defender Toby Alderweireld will still be at the club then. I'm also looking forward to seeing a few new faces that can hopefully take the team further next season, a couple of future stars like striker Troy Parrott, and definitely a better result than the last time they were here."

It will be a tough ask given that it is now seven losses in nine games for the Norwegian handler, with his 28 per cent win ratio the worst of any full-time United boss. Jack Robson held the previous record at 29.5 per cent from 1914 to 1921.
Solskjaer, looking ahead to the pre-season rebuilding job, said it is now "his job to see who wants to sacrifice enough to be here".
He added: "We got a reaction and, in the end, we were beaten by a better team... You can see the work rate, it wasn't good enough though.
"They (City) have set the standard. For the last couple of seasons, they have been the best team in the league. That's the challenge for us to get to and we're clearly not there now. That's for everyone to see.
"There is a difference in quality. That is why they are top and we are where we are. Living in Manchester, we cannot be happy with that."
His candid assessment of their malaise cut little ice with pundits.
The abject display, with only one shot on target, even created a clash between former teammates.
Roy Keane was angered by Gary Neville's insistence that the Red Devils had "given their all" before putting the result down to the "gulf in class" between the two teams.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH
For the last couple of seasons, they (City) have been the best team in the league. That's the challenge for us to get to and we're clearly not there now.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Man United manager, on the huge task he has on hand.

Keane, though, felt there was a basic lack of application from the players, telling Sky Sports: "If that's a player giving it their all, then Manchester United are in even more trouble than I think, and they're in huge trouble."
The former club captain, who before the match singled out Paul Pogba as a "big problem" in a "squad full of bluffers", added: "We spoke about leaders and characters and I just don't think they have enough of them. These young players need examples around the club and that's the big question mark.
"The honeymoon period is definitely over. It's probably a bigger job than what he (Solskjaer) thought. The club has to back Ole now and let him this summer bring in the players he wants to turn these problems around."
Fellow pundit Graeme Souness agreed as he blamed their haphazard transfer policy as the root cause of "where the mistakes happen".
Yet United will continue to swim against the tide if they fail to land Champions League football next term.
Solskjaer acknowledged that Sunday's home league game against fourth-placed Chelsea, who are three points ahead, was do-or-die.
He said: "We know we must deliver a good performance. If we win it, we have two games to get those points and goals we need."

LONDON â€¢ Jurgen Klopp has said that Liverpool are unlikely to "spend the big money" on signings this summer, with the club investing to consolidate his title-chasing squad instead.
The Reds were the biggest-spending Premier League club last summer as Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri arrived to help close the domestic gap to Manchester City.
The club's financial strategy has since altered, however, to focus more on contract renewals rather than signings.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Rhian Brewster have signed new long-term deals since last April that will cost Liverpool Â£150 million (S$266 million) to Â£200 million in wage rises over the coming years.
"I don't want to talk exactly what we will do but I don't think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever," the Reds manager said ahead of today's league trip to Fulham.
"The best way to do it is bring together a group of players, try to develop them altogether and then stay together for a while.
"And that was maybe the main problem of Liverpool for the last decade. When they had a good team after a season, they went all over the world. That will not happen this year for sure."
He believes Liverpool's development took "a big step" with the midweek Champions League victory at Bayern Munich, a result that set up a quarter-final date with Porto.
The German said: "When you think about how Bayern faced us... I never saw them being that defensive-orientated. They had a lot of respect for us but I am not sure we always have the same amount of respect for ourselves."
Fresh from a momentous European night, his team can earn a psychological boost going into the two-week international break by retaking the EPL top spot from City, who play at Swansea in the FA Cup this weekend. They have 73 points and trail the champions by a point with eight games left.
Fulham have very different priorities as they try to pull off a great escape from relegation.
After sacking two managers already this term, Scott Parker's first two games against Chelsea and Leicester have also ended in defeat.
However, he believes his side can cause a major upset and deliver a blow to Liverpool's title challenge.
"Hopefully we'll have an influence on the title race," he said. "We've got some very good footballers at the club and we need to start getting the best out of them...
"If we play the way we want to play, we can cause an upset and we can get points."

PORTO, Portugal (AFP) - Liverpool set up a mouthwatering Champions League semi-final against Barcelona on Wednesday (April 17) after their superstar front three all scored in a 4-1 win away at FC Porto that saw them cruise into the last four 6-1 on aggregate.
On a wet night at the Estadio do Dragao, Liverpool had to weather an early storm before scoring from their first attempt just before the half-hour mark, Sadio Mane prodding home for a goal given after a lengthy VAR review.
Already in control of the tie after a 2-0 win at Anfield in the first leg last week, Liverpool had effectively killed off Porto there and then, but Mohamed Salah, substitute Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk added further goals after the break.
Eder Militao scored a consolation for the hosts 21 minutes before the end, but this was another miserable night for them after they lost 5-0 to the same opponents on this ground a year ago.
Liverpool now march on to a clash with Lionel Messi's Barca, the first meeting of the clubs since a last-16 encounter in 2006/07 that Liverpool won on away goals.
The dream of a Champions League and Premier League double remains alive for Liverpool and their supporters, whose spirits were not dampened by the dreary weather by the banks of the River Douro.
This was their 17th game without defeat and their eighth straight victory, although Barcelona will offer a far tougher test than that provided by Porto.

The first leg of that tie is in a fortnight, and in the meantime Liverpool will revert their focus to domestic matters, with games against Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town up next.
With the matches coming thick and fast, Klopp made three changes to his team here following Sunday's 2-0 win over Chelsea. Firmino and Naby Keita, who both scored in the first leg, dropped out along with Jordan Henderson.
They were replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and Divock Origi, with the latter making his first Champions League start for the club. However, the Belgian only played the first half before making way for Firmino.

EARLY ONSLAUGHT

Indeed, he had hardly touched the ball during a Porto onslaught in the opening stages, sparked by a Jesus Corona shot just over the bar in the first minute.
They had 13 attempts on goal in the first 25 minutes, but would regret not scoring while on top.
When the away side finally made it into the box at the other end, Salah - his every touch jeered by the Porto support who felt he should have been sent off in the first leg - rolled the ball into the six-yard area for Mane to get his 22nd goal of the campaign.
While the offside flag came up, the longer Dutch referee Danny Makkelie spent conferring with his video assistants the more obvious it became that the goal would stand.
Porto knew their chance was gone, with their fans cursing Mane again - he had scored a hat-trick in Liverpool's big win here in the last-16 tie last season.
The match opened up after the interval, with Trent Alexander-Arnold releasing Salah to run through and beat Iker Casillas on 65 minutes.
Porto got their consolation shortly after when Militao - who will join Real Madrid next season - rose to head in from an Alex Telles corner, finally giving their support something to cheer.
They will be glad to see the back of Liverpool, however.
Mane missed the target after rounding Casillas, but Henderson set up fellow substitute Firmino to head in the visitors' third on 77 minutes and Van Dijk nodded in from a corner to round out the scoring.
