Football: Luis Suarez says Barcelona 'looked like schoolboys' in Champions League loss

LIVERPOOL (Reuters) - Barcelona forward Luis Suarez said his teammates defended like children for the fourth goal they conceded in a shock 4-0 defeat at Liverpool on Tuesday (May 7) which sent them crashing out of the Champions League 4-3 on aggregate.
Liverpool forward Divock Origi got the decisive goal that completed a remarkable turnaround from Juergen Klopp's side, netting a low pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold after the defender flummoxed the visitors by taking a quick corner.
"For their fourth goal we looked like schoolboys, we have to be ready for all the criticism that is going to rain down on us now," Suarez told reporters after a miserable return to his former club, where he spent three years before joining Barca.
"We are very sad, we are in a lot of pain, we feel this pain even though we are professionals."
Spanish champions Barca were the only unbeaten side left in the competition but found themselves overwhelmed by Liverpool, sinking to a second straight shocking Champions League exit after last season's 3-0 defeat at AS Roma in the last eight.
The Catalans won the first leg of that tie 4-1 and Uruguay international the 32-year-old Suarez admonished his team for letting a huge lead slip away from them once again.
"We have to do a lot of self criticism because this is the second time that the same thing has happened to us. We cannot commit the same mistake two years in a row, there are many things we need to consider and think about," Suarez added.
"They (Liverpool) did what they wanted to do, which was to score early. They believed from the first minute to the last."
Barca coach Ernesto Valverde fielded the same starting lineup at Anfield as he had played in the first leg - just as he had done in the fateful second leg away to Roma.
But Suarez insisted the coach, who has led Barca to two successive LaLiga titles and taken them to the King's Cup final, should not face criticism for another European meltdown.
"We are the ones that played the game," Suarez said.
"The boss used the same tactics as in the first leg and he tried to do the same thing here. You have to say sorry for the attitude and the things that everyone saw today."

United bank on 'Goal threats'

BARCELONA • In Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, Manchester United have a "decent plan" in place to put an end to Barcelona's streak of 30 unbeaten games in the Champions League at home - a competition record.
Calling on his attacking trio, who are likely to start, to draw on the spirit of their comeback win against Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said ahead of the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final today: "You look at the quality of those players and that gives us a threat.
"We carry a goal threat but, of course, what we did against PSG must give everyone a huge confidence boost because that experience was probably the best they have had for many years.
"They are probably dreaming about another at the Nou Camp."
The trip to Barcelona also carries special significance for the United boss - it will mark the 20th anniversary of his added-time strike as the Red Devils beat Bayern Munich in the 1999 final to lift the treble.
However, Solskjaer will not let sentiment cloud his preparations as he attempts to conjure up another victory against all the odds in Spain, with his team trailing 1-0.
Telling BBC Sport he will instead be "so focused and concentrated", the Norwegian said: "Of course, the goal I have probably seen a million times. I don't mind being remembered for something like that.
"I will have my last little gut feeling on who to play, sometimes you do get those hunches.

"Against PSG, I had a team in mind when I travelled in the morning, walked out into the stadium, saw the stadium and thought, 'No, I will change'. I can't wait."
But David de Gea knows their opponents are desperate to make amends for their collapse against Roma at the same stage last season and make the semi-finals for the first time since 2015.
Admitting that they faced a "big challenge", the United and Spain goalkeeper said: "We will try to fight and win the game.
"It's a special occasion, in Spain against Barcelona, a Champions League night, so it's going to be an amazing game."
And it is the advantage Ernesto Valverde's men hold that has led former United boss Jose Mourinho to tip the Spanish champions to progress to the next phase.
Despite conceding "every club has a chance", the Portuguese told Russian TV network RT that Barcelona " have a little advantage".
He added: "They are winning one-nil and now play at home. You have everything open for you when you start feeling you can."
In Turin, Cristiano Ronaldo will spearhead Juventus' old guard as they look to finish the job today against Ajax's impressive young guns in a last-eight clash between two sides desperate to end years of Champions League heartbreak.
The Italian champions have the edge on away goals thanks to Ronaldo's 125th Champions League goal following the 1-1 draw in Amsterdam, but the tie - a repeat of the 1973 and 1996 finals - remains on a knife-edge.
Juventus are looking to reach a third semi-final in five seasons, while the Dutch outfit have not made it to the last four since 1997.

Football: Klopp rues missed opportunity as Liverpool settle for United draw

Football: Klopp rues missed opportunity as Liverpool settle for United draw

MANCHESTER (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool’s 0-0 draw at injury-hit Manchester United felt like a missed opportunity.
Klopp’s side moved one point clear at the top of the Premier League after their stalemate at Old Trafford on Sunday (Feb 24).
But it was a frustrating afternoon for Liverpool, who wasted a chance to go three points above title rivals Manchester City.  The Reds managed only one shot on target and Klopp felt their erratic display was largely due to the number of injuries suffered by both teams.
Liverpool lost Roberto Firmino to a first half injury, while United saw Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard limp off before the interval.
“It was a strange game. We started really well, exactly like we wanted. Then the injury crisis started and that obviously cost us the rhythm. It was like ‘what’s going on’,” Klopp said.
“In the end we have to admit United played with a completely new midfield and strikers. We lost our rhythm and couldn’t get it back.
“It was a game without a lot of highlights. It was an intense situation. It was a point United wanted and we lost two.
“Some days United are beatable. You have to do it and we didn’t do it.”
Liverpool’s second successive goalless draw came at the end of a week in which they failed to break down Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 first leg.  None of Liverpool’s attacking stars shone against United, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both quiet.
Klopp conceded Liverpool had lacked composure at critical moments and he called on them to bounce back against Watford in midweek.
“I’m not here to be frustrated. I always take what I get from the boys. It doesn’t feel world-class in the moment. That’s OK,” Klopp said.
“We didn’t play a lot of wonderful balls in the final third. The build-up from deep was OK, but then you need to be more flexible.
“You need to keep the ball in the right areas, to shoot. We didn’t do it often enough.
“It is a point gained because we have one more than before but it doesn’t feel like that. Now Wednesday is our next game.”
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was impressed with the way his players kept Liverpool at bay despite so many injuries.
“Everything that could have gone wrong in the first half went wrong. We had four injuries – we had to keep Marcus Rashford on – it seemed like it was going to be a tough afternoon,” he said.
“I can’t remember Liverpool having a chance. Even though they had possession, I can’t remember David de Gea making a save.”Â

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer celebrated his first game as permanent Manchester United manager with a 2-1 Premier League win over Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday (March 30) as his team moved back into the top four.
But it was a far from impressive performance from United even though goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial earned the victory which moved them up to fourth in the table, level on points with third-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
After a slow start, United took the lead in the 28th minute when Luke Shaw played a delightful through ball into the path of Rashford who clipped it past advancing Watford keeper Ben Foster.
Watford enjoyed plenty of possession in United's half and looked dangerous when breaking without causing David De Gea too much work.
United's main problem was their midfield which barely operated as a unit. Neither the deep-lying Nemanja Matic nor Paul Pogba, in an advanced role, were anywhere near their best and that left the only effective route down the flanks.
It was from a burst down the right wing that United made sure of the points with Martial's strike in the 72nd minute.
Substitute Jesse Lingard's low cross caused Martial and Foster to tangle for the ball, which fell kindly for the Frenchman who hooked home United's second.

Watford got some reward for their positive approach when Abdoulaye Doucoure slotted home in the 90th minute after an exchange of passes with Isaac Success.
"Watford started off really well and we struggled to get to grips with their tempo," said Solskjaer who twice used the word "sloppy" in describing his team's performance.
"We defended great, and after about 20 minutes, I felt we were more comfortable. It was more a draw, performance-wise. We'll take the three points," he said.
Norwegian Solksjaer, handed a three-year contract on Thursday, has led United to 15 wins in 20 matches in all competitions since taking over as caretaker manager in December.
Watford slipped to 10th with the loss but manager Javi Gracia felt his team could have got more out of the match.
"I think it was a very good performance, but a bad result. We didn't take the chances we created in the first half. We dominated the game, we had more possession, we created more chances. But we didn't score and they punished us. I'm a little bit frustrated," he said.

Klopp not obsessed with leaving storied Reds legacy

Klopp not obsessed with leaving storied Reds legacy

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has said he is only interested in being judged by God and not the trophies he wins as Liverpool manager.
The Reds remain in pursuit of the Premier League title and the Champions League, where they face Porto in the quarter-finals, as they look to land the first trophy of his tenure.
While the German felt Wednesday's Champions League last-16 victory at Bayern Munich had put the club back on the map of world football, being part of that rise, and not personal glory, was the only job satisfaction he needed.
Dismissing the idea that his reign will be measured on silverware alone, he said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "You can't imagine how little I'm interested in that.
"I never thought about myself in that way. My job is to do everything I can to help the team be as successful as possible. I'm not searching to be remembered in 50 years.
"For me, it's no pressure, only opportunity. I love what I do, I have a fantastic team out there, and that's all that I need to be a happy person.

FOCUS ON US, NOT THEM
Just play that game (at Fulham) and stay in the same mood like we always are - confident but greedy, aggressive, direct, all what you need in a football game. Stay in that mood and everything will be fine. Whether City have a game in hand, it's not that important.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, egging his team on against relegation-threatened Fulham.

"I respect a lot the desire of all the people and the players, and I can be really part of that, I can be part of that dream. But it's not for me at the end, it's for the people. I am not interested in who judges me. What other people say about me, I couldn't be less interested."
Despite having reached the Champions League final last term, Klopp felt the Bayern win was "a big step" in his side's development, although he urged his players to stay "completely concentrated on Fulham" ahead of their Premier League trip to Craven Cottage tomorrow.
A win will give Liverpool a two-point lead at the top of the table, with Manchester City not playing in the league owing to their FA Cup last-eight tie at Swansea.
He added: "Now don't think about what happens afterwards or whatever. Just play that game (at Fulham) and stay in the same mood like we always are - confident but greedy, aggressive, direct, all what you need in a football game.
"Stay in that mood and everything will be fine. Whether City have a game in hand, it's not that important. We just want to win our game at the weekend... we need to think about winning our games only."
"We haven't struggled psychologically with them ahead of us or us ahead of them, it's (about) being really focused on the football game. Until the end of the season, let's play football."
Although the Cottagers, 13 points from safety, are expected to pose little danger to Klopp's team, he will have to shuffle his midfield around with an ankle injury ruling out skipper Jordan Henderson, while Naby Keita will undergo a late fitness test having missed the Bayern game.

Ronaldo fined, not jailed for tax fraud

Ronaldo fined, not jailed for tax fraud

MADRID • Portugal and Juventus footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted to committing tax fraud while playing for Real Madrid and agreed to pay an €18.8 million (S$29 million) fine after striking a deal with prosecutors and tax authorities in return for a 23-month suspended prison sentence.
Ronaldo, 33, had been accused of defrauding the authorities of €14.8 million in unpaid taxes between 2011 and 2014.
In 2017, Madrid's regional state prosecutor alleged that the player had used what it deemed to be a shell company in the Virgin Islands to "create a screen in order to hide his total income from Spain's tax office".
It said Ronaldo intentionally did not declare income of €28.4 million related to image rights, and declared only €11.5 million of earnings from 2011 to 2014 when his real income was almost €43 million.
The prosecutor also alleged that the forward falsely reported income as coming from real estate, which it said had greatly reduced his tax rate.
Ronaldo arrived in court in Madrid yesterday morning, wearing sunglasses and a black blazer while accompanied by his partner Georgina Rodriguez.
His request to enter the provincial court through an underground car park was denied.

  • $29million

  • Fine Cristiano Ronaldo will pay, in return for a 23-month suspended prison sentence, for tax fraud he committed when he was still a Real Madrid player.

"I am very well," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner told reporters outside the court after the brief hearing.
The hearing came six months after Ronaldo agreed a deal that would see him spared jail if he paid fines totalling almost €19 million.
In Spain, a judge can suspend sentences of two years or less for first-time offenders.
Meanwhile, the trial of Ronaldo's former Real teammate Xabi Alonso, also in court yesterday over accusations of tax fraud, was suspended, a court magistrate said.
Prosecutors were seeking a five-year jail sentence and a fine of €4 million for the Spaniard, who retired as a player in 2017, accusing him of defrauding the Spanish state of some €2 million between 2010 and 2012.
Alonso said he was confident he had not committed a crime and would have to wait while the magistrates evaluated his case.
"I'd be worried if I thought I had something to hide or something I didn't do right but, as that isn't the case, I am carrying on," Alonso told reporters.

GABRIEL QUAK (WARRIORS FC)

The first Singaporean to score in Thai League 1, Gabriel recorded four goals and one assist in 24 games for Navy in 2018.
Despite their eventual relegation, Quak had done enough to not just become a fan favourite but also earn a Lions recall. Rediscovering his creative abilities and adding a defensive dimension to his game, the fleet-footed winger was one of the bright sparks in Fandi Ahmad's national team.
While Quak was released by Navy, there was interest from other Thai clubs, as well as Indonesia's Barito Putera. But he had already set his mind on returning home to nine-time champions Warriors FC, who he had actually signed for last season before Navy came in.
He said: "I thought about playing in the Singapore Premier League when I found out my wife was expecting our second child.
"I already missed out on a lot of my firstborn's childhood moments because I was in Thailand and these are the things money can't buy.
"I hope to continue scoring and creating goals for my new team but the main aim is to add one more star to the Warriors crest. We want to take the club back to the top and make it to the AFC Champions League qualifiers or AFC Cup."

SHAWAL ANUAR (GEYLANG INTERNATIONAL)

A poster boy for the National Football League, Shawal Anuar made the leap to join Geylang International's professional ranks in 2014 and never looked back.
Despite his waifish 1.68m, 58kg frame, the 27-year-old winger has tormented defences with his speed and goal sense. In just 77 league games, he scored 22 times for the Eagles, and he also took just two international appearances to grab his first goal for Singapore.
Both club and country missed him dearly when Shawal tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a 3-1 league win over Young Lions last July, which ruled him out for the rest of the season as well as the AFF Suzuki Cup.
Eager to make his return, Shawal said: "I was really sad to miss out on the Suzuki Cup, but now I'm focused on making a full recovery and coming back stronger.

"I had 17 league goals in the past two seasons and I want to score more this season. Geylang have a really balanced team this season, we have bonded well pre-season and we are feeling really positive about the new season."

STIPE PLAZIBAT (HOUGANG UNITED)

The last time Stipe Plazibat played in Singapore, he scored 37 goals in 39 games for Home United in all competitions in the 2017 season.
It earned him a move to Thailand in 2018, but it ended up being his most turbulent season yet as Bangkok Glass de-registered him just two days before the transfer window closed. Mutual termination came only in June and he returned to Croatia to play for NK Solin in the second division.
The 29-year-old striker is no stranger to Hougang fans as the Cheetahs were the first Singapore team he signed for in 2016, when he scored 16 league goals.
He said: "It feels like homecoming, and also unfinished business because I know many people and places here and I feel secure, and I have very good chemistry on and off the field with players like Faris Ramli, but I also really want to win something here.
"My target this year is team success because in the past I scored many goals but didn't win anything. I always aim to score in every game, but the most important thing is to feel that my conscience is clear after I have done everything I could on the pitch."
