Start off well, Solskjaer tells United after winning run ends
LONDON • Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer warned his players against complacency after a 2-2 draw at home to Burnley halted their six-game winning streak in the English Premier League under him.
He had been bidding to make history by becoming the first manager to win his first seven league games, but was thwarted after the Clarets seized a shock two-goal lead with nine minutes left on Tuesday night.
Although United salvaged a point, after Paul Pogba's penalty and an added-time goal from Victor Lindelof cancelled out strikes from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood, Solskjaer criticised his players for being "too slow in possession in the first half".
He said: "The danger of winning might be that you think what we've done before gives us the right to start off on 90 per cent because we're winning one or two-nil.
"But we don't. You have to start properly in each game and today, we didn't start off well enough to cause Burnley enough problems."
The Red Devils, on 45 points and now two behind fifth-placed Arsenal, piled plenty of pressure on Burnley's defence, but caused too few problems with their lack of wing play.
Solskjaer added: "We know they (Burnley) are well organised and happy if we cross the ball, we needed more tempo and more urgency in the play, play our way into the box more."

  • Manchester United have failed to open the scoring for the first time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in nine matches in all competitions.

He was, however, happy with the late rally after the Old Trafford faithful were on the verge of witnessing his first loss in charge.
The Norwegian said: "I was stopped so many times by the staff, so many people saying great fighting spirit, and the way they came back was fantastic and so of course (I am) happy with a point.
"We could have got three even at the end but we just ran out of time. We started too late with the urgency, that's a learning curve, but now you've got your answer, (we) can come back if we go one down or two down, so I'm very happy with the response."
But United's Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic did not share Solskjaer's optimism over their battling qualities as he felt that the draw was still "two points lost".
Conceding that their performance had not been up to scratch, he said: "We expected more. We should play better, have to play better, see where we made mistakes, to improve and play like we have in the last seven or eight games.
"But this is the Premier League, every team has quality and will punish you if you miss chances, exactly what Burnley did today.
"The mentality needs to be much better than the first 75 minutes. I have to repeat - today was not good enough."

Can Sarri recover authority at Chelsea after Kepa incident?

Can Sarri recover authority at Chelsea after Kepa incident?

LONDON (AFP) - Kepa Arrizabalaga's extraordinary refusal to be substituted by Maurizio Sarri in Sunday's (Feb 24) League Cup final heaps the pressure on the beleaguered Chelsea boss as he desperately seeks consistency.
The Spaniard twice required treatment late in extra-time against Manchester City at Wembley, with the match heading for penalties, so the Italian boss planned for his substitution.
Willy Caballero, who saved three penalties for City in their 2016 League Cup final win, was readied to go on, but Kepa declined to leave the pitch - sparking confusion and angering Sarri.
Even after the bizarre incident, the world's most expensive goalkeeper had the chance to be a hero.
He saved Leroy Sane's penalty in the shootout, but could have done better with Sergio Aguero's effort that slipped under his body as Pep Guardiola's side retained the trophy with a 4-3 shootout win after a goalless draw.
Victory at Wembley might have bought Sarri time, particularly coming so soon after a 6-0 humbling by the same opponents in the Premier League.
But instead the 60-year-old Italian, who is yet to win a trophy in his managerial career, must prepare his players to host high-flying Tottenham in the Premier League on Wednesday, knowing he cannot afford to slip further behind the top four.

Sarri, Kepa and David Luiz, the closest player to Kepa throughout the incident, were "on message" after the match at Wembley, all insisting it was a misunderstanding, not insubordination.
"The coach has the power over the group. He has our respect," Luiz said. "For me, there is not a problem here for that. We all believe in his philosophy, we all believe in the way he wants us to play."
But former Chelsea skipper John Terry said the former Napoli coach was in a difficult situation, with the incident coming after weeks of speculation over his future and concerns over his style of play, dubbed "Sarri-ball".
"It leaves Sarri in a tough place," he told Sky Sports. "I'm surprised he didn't force him to come off." Ex-Chelsea striker Chris Sutton described the scenes as "mutiny at Chelsea".
"Kepa should be sacked, not Sarri," he told BBC radio. "He's been undermined - it's the worst thing that can happen to a manager."

Player power

Under International Football Association Board rules "if a player who is to be replaced refuses to leave, play continues" and it is not the first time it has happened.
In the Premier League in April 2017, while at Swansea, Lukasz Fabianski was injured in the 81st minute, declined a change in the 86th minute and conceded three goals afterwards as a 1-0 lead turned into a 3-1 loss to Tottenham.
Chelsea's history suggests players hold significant influence at Stamford Bridge. The hire-and-fire policy of owner Roman Abramovich means managers have a limited shelf life and players have previously exploited the policy.
This is not the same group as the one that defied Andre Villas-Boas or masterminded a Champions League win under Roberto Di Matteo, when the senior players were said to be more influential than the interim manager.
But the incident suggested there could be a leadership vacuum at Stamford Bridge.
Sarri replaced Antonio Conte in July and got off to a flying start, with Chelsea unbeaten for the first 18 competitive games.
But recent results have included the 6-0 mauling at City, a 4-0 loss at Bournemouth and a 2-0 defeat by Manchester United in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.
After the Spurs game, Chelsea have a run of what appear to be winnable fixtures before away matches against Liverpool and Manchester United in April.
But the question is whether Sarri still has authority in the dressing room and whether he will be given the time to turn things around.

Vietnam 1 Malaysia 0 (Vietnam win 3-2 on aggregate)
HANOI • An early goal by Nguyen Anh Duc proved decisive as Vietnam beat Malaysia 1-0 at the My Dinh National Stadium yesterday to lift the AFF Suzuki Cup for the second time.
The Vietnamese had allowed a two-goal lead to slip to a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday.
But Vietnam were determined to press home their home advantage early on and Duc restored their advantage when he volleyed home from close range after only six minutes.
However, they had to survive several scares as goalkeeper Dang Van Lam made a series of fine saves to preserve Vietnam's lead, with Park Hang-seo's men winning 3-2 on aggregate to claim the Asean Football Federation title for the first time since 2008.
Vietnam had the benefit of two away goals from the first leg and they made an excellent start in Hanoi, taking the lead when Nguyen Quang Hai's chip from the left found Duc, whose volley was too powerful for goalkeeper Farizal Marlias to keep out of his net.
The hosts had to be indebted to a stellar display from Lam, who was called into action just before half-time to tip Syahmi Safari's first-time effort over his crossbar.
He showed fine reflexes again after the break to claw Mohamadou Sumareh's header away to safety, before making another fine save to keep out Safawi Rasid's free kick.
Ten players - six Vietnamese and four Malaysians - were booked in the scrappy encounter, which culminated in the dismissal of Shahrul Saad in added time when he received his second yellow card after committing a foul on the halfway line to snuff out a counter-attack.
Hai, who scored three goals and was an ever-present for Vietnam in the tournament, was named the Most Valuable Player as Malaysia's dream of their second title since 2010 ended.
Malaysia coach Tan Cheng Hoe admitted that Vietnam's early goal "destroyed" his plans for the game and "affected the players' confidence".
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said the Harimau Malaya should "look at this as an experience to improve themselves". "I am convinced that with a little more effort, we have the potential to win matches to come," he said.

Football: 'Public uproar' as critics round on Fabio Cannavaro over China role

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Fabio Cannavaro's first task as China coach may be to win over a sceptical public after his appointment was met with criticism and even anger.
Former players and state media questioned the credentials of the 2006 World Cup winner and world player of the year, who is yet to claim a major trophy as a coach.
The Chinese Football Association has not made it clear if it was a permanent or temporary role for Cannavaro, who will remain in charge of Chinese Super League giants Guangzhou Evergrande.
"In his time as a player, Cannavaro was great, but as a coach, he still has achieved nothing," the Youth Daily commented, saying his appointment had "caused public uproar".
"Cannavaro's achievements as a player are undisputed," former international Li Yan told the newspaper.
"However, his decisions during games and performance as a head coach are not convincing enough."
The 45-year-old Italian's ascension to the post - with mentor and predecessor Marcello Lippi remaining as an adviser - was widely predicted in Chinese media.

But sceptics said the former Juventus and Real Madrid centre-back has done little to prove he deserves the job after it was confirmed in a low-key announcement late last week.
In Cannavaro's first full season with Evergrande last year, the southern team relinquished their seven-year grip on the Chinese league trophy.
Previously, Cannavaro had a seven-month spell with Evergrande before being sacked in 2014, and won promotion with Tianjin Quanjian in 2016, steering them to third in the CSL table the following year.
"(His) familiarity and understanding of Chinese football may be his greatest advantage," the Youth Daily said, echoing the words of the CFA when they named Cannavaro.
He also has a good record bringing through youth players, the newspaper said.
Some media speculated that the hosts' two games in this week's China Cup will be an audition for the former defender to get the job permanently.
Eight Evergrande players were named in the squad ahead of Thursday's clash with Thailand and Monday's game against Uzbekistan or Uruguay.
But Li warned that the overwhelming Evergrande presence in the squad might cause problems with players from other clubs.
China and Cannavaro - if he lasts beyond the next two matches - are building towards the qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which begin in September.
China have reached the World Cup only once, in 2002, when they failed to win a point or even score a goal.
The Guangzhou Daily noted that Cannavaro's appointment came just days after Evergrande were humbled 3-1 by South Korean newcomers Daegu in Asia's Champions League.
"Is he good enough to take up the responsibility of Evergrande and the national football team?" it asked. "These are still question marks."
Shanghai-based Oriental Sports Daily was scathing about Cannavaro's dual role.
"If this part-time job becomes the norm for a long time in the future it is absolutely not the norm - and nor should it be," it said.

Football: Milan draw another blank in Frosinone stalemate as pressure piles on Gattuso

MILAN (REUTERS) - AC Milan completed four Serie A games without scoring for the first time since 1984 when they were held 0-0 at next-to-bottom Frosinone on Wednesday (Dec 26).
As speculation mounted about his future, beleaguered Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso admitted his side were "dreadful" in the first half against the team with Serie A's worst defensive record.
"We handed it to our opponents: we were not on the field, we lost all the 50-50 balls. We knew it would be difficult and we could easily have lost it," said Gattuso, whose side have not scored for 379 minutes.
"We played a dreadful first half. I cannot accept a performance like that. We can't play like that if we want to qualify for the Champions League," he added.
Samu Castillejo hit the post for Milan while Frosinone, who have shipped 36 goals in 18 games, had a goal disallowed before half time.
Camillo Ciano volleyed home from Raffaele Maiello's pass but, following a Video Assistant Referee review, the referee ruled that Maiello had fouled Hakan Calhangolu as he won the ball in midfield.
In an end-to-end finale, Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain fired over the bar from 12 metres in stoppage time from Calhanoglu's inviting pass as he completed his ninth game without scoring.
Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma came to Milan's rescue with an excellent save from Ciano's low drive.
Milan stayed fifth with 28 points, outside the Champions League places, and are in danger of being engulfed by a pack of teams just below them.
The last time Milan went four league games against scoring was under coach Nils Liedholm in 1984-85 when their rivals were Torino, Avellino, Hellas Verona and Sampdoria.
"We need to score goals and we weren't precise enough. We missed all the chances that came our way," Gattuso said.

Hougang United v Tampines Rovers
Jalan Besar, 5.30pm
Live stream: www.fas.org.sg/live1

In six months, Hougang United have transformed themselves from wooden spoonists to dark horses for the Singapore Premier League (SPL) title.
The Cheetahs, beefed up by several key signings in the off-season, face an immediate test of their title credentials in their opener - five-time champions Tampines Rovers.
To boost a blunt forward line, which saw just 22 goals in 24 games last year, they have reunited Singapore international Faris Ramli and Croatian striker Stipe Plazibat.
The duo plundered 58 goals in all competitions for Home United in 2017 before spending last season abroad at separate clubs.
They have also brought in other Lions like Hafiz Abu Sujad and Afiq Yunos, and re-signed Zulfahmi Arifin after his one season with Thai side Chonburi.
The moves have had some touting Hougang as title contenders. It is quite a turnaround, considering that they were last in the nine-team SPL last year and have never finished in the top half of the league.

  • Goals Faris Ramli and Stipe Plazibat shared at Home United in 2017. They are reunited at Hougang this year.

Their best results were finishing runners-up in the League Cup in 2007 and 2011.
Head coach Clement Teo is confident of ending the barren run, saying: "Looking at the players we have, we know we can win silverware. But we are also aware that no games have been played yet.
"On paper, yes, we look fantastic and I have no doubt about my players' capabilities. What we need to do now is to get them to work together, on and off the field."

The club have failed to deliver on pre-season hype before.
In 2016, they signed the league's reigning Player of the Year Fumiya Kogure, only to end up sixth out of nine teams. A year later, they roped in Philippe Aw, who built a stylish Home United team over two seasons and brought with him two key men, Zulfahmi and Azhar Sairudin. Again, the Cheetahs finished sixth.
While Teo is bullish this year will be different, he expects a difficult start against Tampines, and terms his team firm underdogs for the tie.
Tampines, seen by some as favourites for the SPL crown, thrashed defending champions Albirex Niigata 4-0 in a friendly two weeks ago, and then won 3-1 at Myanmar league and Cup champions Yangon United in the AFC Cup last Tuesday.
Tampines' strongest XI are almost unchanged from last season. Hougang midfielder Fabian Kwok says that while this consistency is beneficial, he believes that Hougang are better equipped against strong teams this term.
"Last year, we had good players and were competitive in many games," said the 29-year-old, who has been with Hougang since 2017.
"But we lacked the experience, and often lost by one goal to the top teams. This year, we've signed players who are established and they bring that experience we need."
Plazibat, who scored 25 league goals in 22 games for Home in 2017, stressed that the best chance of victory today is through their strength as a unit.
"We are aware of our capabilities (as players) but individual players don't guarantee you anything, you need a team," said the 29-year-old.
"We are very serious about wanting to start the season on a high, because it will be very difficult later on if we don't collect points early.
"My target this season is to win (silverware) with the team. If I score many goals along the way, that's a bonus."

Football: Valencia knock Barcelona off Copa del Rey throne

SEVILLA (REUTERS) - Valencia beat Barcelona 2-1 to win the Copa del Rey on Saturday (May 25), ending the Spanish champions' four-year winning streak in the competition and denying them a domestic double.
Kevin Gameiro and Rodrigo Moreno struck first-half goals to give Marcelino's dominant Valencia control of the final in Seville's sweltering Benito Villamarin stadium.
Record 30-times Cup winners Barcelona struggled without injured duo Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele but Lionel Messi pulled the Catalans back into the game with a finish from close range.
Goncalo Guedes missed a gilt-edged chance in stoppage-time for Valencia but they held on to win their first major trophy since last lifting the Cup in 2008.
