Football: Messi humbled by Betis fans' cheers

SEVILLE • After his fourth hat-trick of the season and the 51st of his career, pundit Gary Lineker took to social media to claim that "there are great players, all-time great players, and then there is Lionel Messi".
The Real Betis fans were of the same opinion after seeing their side blown off the park 4-1 in LaLiga by a vintage Barcelona side, with the Argentinian talisman at the heart of everything on Sunday.
Messi was so mesmerising at the Estadio Benito Villamarin - a simple finish was sandwiched between another free-kick special and an arcing lob - that the home crowd gave him a standing ovation, before bowing and chanting his name.
The 31-year-old was humbled by the rapturous reception, telling reporters post-game: "I don't remember the opposition cheering me for a goal, I am very grateful.
"Every time we come to this stadium, they treat us really well. Very grateful and happy for the win, which was very important."
His coach Ernesto Valverde claimed it "was an acknowledgement of the player he is".
The Spaniard said: "Even though the opposition concedes goals to Messi, they can still enjoy this unbelievable era which he has created, they enjoy it too and today, they recognised that.
"It's significant that they gave him this ovation. Our rivals' supporters have to suffer him but they also appreciate him."
The victory moved Barcelona 10 points clear of nearest challengers Atletico Madrid with 10 games left to play and Messi was delighted the Spanish champions seized the "opportunity to increase the gap".
The forward, who now has 39 goals in all competitions this term, added: "We had to take it tonight. The title is in our own hands but nothing has been decided yet.
"Worse things have happened before. We have a great advantage, but there are many points still to play for."
The only blot on the night was the sight of Luis Suarez, who scored Barcelona's other goal, limping off late on, with what Valverde said was a "bad sprain" to his ankle.
However, fears that the Uruguay striker could miss the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester United on April 10 were allayed after the club yesterday confirmed he would be "sidelined for 10 to 15 days".

Gattuso livid with Milan's shock exit

Gattuso livid with Milan's shock exit
ATHENS • AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso slammed his players for "making fools of ourselves" after bowing out of the Europa League following their shock 3-1 loss at Olympiakos.
"We gifted the game," he said after Thursday's Group F defeat in Athens, where all the goals came in the second half.
Pape Abou Cisse opened the scoring for the Greek side, whose lead was doubled after an own goal by Cristian Zapata.
The defender made amends by pulling one back for Milan, but Konstantinos Fortounis' penalty sealed the victory for the home side.
Gattuso also bemoaned the brittle nature of the seven-time European champions, who simply went to pieces after missing several opportunities to score.
"We were too naive and allowed Olympiakos to get back into the game. We are very upset because we always make the same mistakes again and again," he said.
"We had the game in our hands but, if you create seven or eight chances in a stadium like this and then fall apart the moment things go wrong, you deserve to go out."

Years since seven-time European champions AC Milan were knocked out of European competition at a group stage (Champions League in 2001) before Thursday's Europa League exit.

The former Italy midfielder, however, refused to blame the hostile atmosphere at the Karaiskaki Stadium, or the refereeing decisions which went against his team.
"You can talk about the referee, about them throwing extra balls on to the pitch and the strange trumpet noise, but we should focus on what we can do to make Milan a better team," he added.
"We have to look at ourselves. They were better than us because they were energetic and determined. I apologise to all the Milan fans around the world for not having achieved our objective."
The last-32 draw will be held on Monday, with Arsenal, Benfica, Real Betis, Chelsea, Dinamo Zagreb, Dynamo Kiev, Eintracht Frankfurt, Genk, Inter Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, RB Salzburg, Sevilla, Valencia, Villarreal and Zenit St Petersburg all seeded for the next round.

Football: Southampton power past struggling Huddersfield Town

LONDON (REUTERS) - Southampton continued their revival under new manager Ralph Hasenhuettl as goals from Nathan Redmond, Danny Ings and Michael Obafemi sealed a 3-1 Premier League victory at Huddersfield Town on Saturday (Dec 22).
Southampton, who ended Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run last time out, secured consecutive league wins for the first time in 20 months and they achieved it with a dominant performance at the John Smith's Stadium.
Southampton went ahead against the run of play in the first half, as the lively Redmond ran on to fellow midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's through pass and finished emphatically past goalkeeper Jonas Lossl in the 15th minute.
They doubled their lead three minutes from the break as Ings slotted home from the penalty spot for his seventh league goal of the season, after being brought down by Huddersfield defender Mathias Jorgensen's clumsy challenge.
Huddersfield reduced the deficit to 2-1 after the restart as midfielder Philip Billing's swerving effort from distance flew past Southampton goalkeeper McCarthy, who appeared to be unsighted by a team mate.
Southampton then failed to deal with a long throw and nearly paid the price as Jorgensen's header from point blank range was swatted away by McCarthy.
The hosts grew in confidence as they pushed for an equaliser but it was Southampton who restored their two-goal advantage in the 71st minute, as substitute Michael Obafemi calmly finished from close range after good work from Redmond inside the box.
Ireland international Obafemi, who became Southampton's youngest Premier League goalscorer at 18 years and 169 days, could have doubled his tally in the 86th minute after being played through but he could not find a way past Lossl.
Victory lifted Southampton to 16th in the table with 15 points from 18 matches.
"It was a deserved win for us. We played a fantastic first half with fantastic goals... the guys worked very hard today," Hasenhuettl said.
"We have very good options (in attack) when we win back the ball. The passion, character and mentality of our defence was good too... it was an aggressive atmosphere and we knew we had to do our best.
"It's a very important step for us and I hope it will go on like this."
Huddersfield have now lost each of their last five league matches to sit second from bottom with 10 points.
"We have to criticise ourselves today... this is a tough time at the moment," Huddersfield manager David Wagner said.
"We've to make ourselves independent from the circumstances and perform again. We have to show we have learned from this lesson today... we were not brave enough."

Football: 'Proud' Pochettino hints he could stay at Spurs after Champions League defeat

MADRID (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino kept tight-lipped about his future as Tottenham Hotspur coach after his side lost the Champions League final to Liverpool on Saturday (June 1).
The Argentine has been linked with a move to Italian champions Juventus and German giants Bayern Munich but suggested he may stay to try to guide Spurs to another final after their 2-0 defeat in Madrid.
"When you live this experience you want to do it again. I hope we can do it again in the future," Pochettino told BT Sport.
"It's about trying, it's about believing, it's about building, and I hope it happens again as soon as possible."
Spurs fell behind to a Mohamed Salah penalty almost straight after kick-off but were the better side after the break before Divock Origi arrowed home the decisive second.
"You never believe that after one minute you're going to be 1-0 down, a situation that not only changed our plans, it changed the dynamic (of the game)."

"I'm very proud with the effort, how we fight. We played so well, we played so well in the second half. I feel so proud, nothing to say."

With Harry Kane and Dele Alli sidelined until March, everyone was ready to write off Tottenham Hotspur's season as predictions of a slide down the table arrived. Without their star players, the story went, Mauricio Pochettino's men would crumble and be dragged back into the dogfight that is the battle for fourth.

Football: Pochettino says energised Spurs ready for Dortmund test

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham have shaken off the fatigue from their gruelling schedule as they prepare to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday.
Pochettino was frustrated that Tottenham had to play their Premier League match against Leicester on Sunday, while Dortmund were in action 24 hours earlier against Hoffenheim.
The Tottenham boss claimed over the weekend that the extra day of rest for the Bundesliga leaders could put his team at a "massive disadvantage" in the first leg at Wembley.
Adding to Pochettino's frustration, Dortmund have also benefited from a refreshing winter break, while Tottenham have been damaged by injuries to Harry Kane and Dele Alli following the draining Christmas and New Year programme.
But, aware of the dangers of giving his players a ready-made excuse for under-performing, Pochettino was keen to accentuate the positive.
"I've described before, or in the last few days, that it was a little bit unfair (the schedule)," Pochettino told reporters on Tuesday (Feb 12).
"But that is not an excuse (not) to arrive tomorrow in our best condition and fight to try to win. I think you can feel in the eyes of the players the energy."
Tottenham beat Dortmund twice in the Champions League group stage last season but they will face more formidable opponents this time.
Dortmund sit on top of the Bundesliga with a vibrant squad including young England forward Jadon Sancho.
Pochettino is well aware of the threat posed by the Germans as he tries to lead Tottenham into the quarter-finals of a European competition for the first time in his five-year reign.
But, despite the absence of Kane and Alli, they have reeled off four successive wins to stay in the Premier League title race.
And Pochettino expects his side to rise to the occasion in the same never-say-die style they displayed in the group stage this term.

ENERGY AND MOTIVATION

It took late goals against PSV Eindhoven, Inter Milan and Barcelona for Tottenham to make the last 16 by the skin of their teeth.
"We were talking in the meeting before and it's completely different (in big games)," Pochettino said.
"If you ask me why, I don't know, because I'm a person whose own motivation is always high, when we play against Dortmund or Barcelona or we play against different (teams) in different competitions.
"But of course you can feel that it's the Champions League, that it's going to be a massive game with, I hope, a full stadium at Wembley and of course the energy and motivation is going to be there."
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has already seized on Pochettino's upbeat message.
Recalling Tottenham's group-stage win over Real Madrid last season, Vertonghen says the north Londoners have no reason to fear any team in Europe if they play at their best.
"We can beat anyone. We have shown that last year. Over two games we were the better team against Real Madrid, who were the eventual winners of the trophy," he said.
There was frustration for Tottenham at this stage of the Champions League last season when they conceded two second-half goals to crash out against Juventus after they had looked to have the tie in their control.
That painful memory will motivate Vertonghen and company against Dortmund.
"That is why it was a shame we could not do better last year because we felt we should have done better," he said.
"That is why everyone has the feeling we can do it this year."
