Football: Cristiano Ronaldo recalled by Portugal for first time since World Cup

LISBON (REUTERS) - Cristiano Ronaldo was recalled by the Portuguese national squad on Friday (March 15) for the first time since last year's World Cup.
The 34-year-old, who is Portugal's most capped player with 154 appearances and all-time leading scorer with 85 goals, had not been included for any games in the second half of last year.
Coach Fernando Santos had initially said that a mutual decision had been made to give Ronaldo a rest following his move from Real Madrid to Juventus but had been ambiguous about the player's future when questioned in November.
Portugal continued to flourish without Ronaldo, winning their Nations League group against Poland and Italy with a game to spare to qualify for the final four-team tournament which the country will host in June.
However, any doubts about his future were removed when Ronaldo's name was among 25 read by Santos during a news conference for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Ukraine and Serbia.
"Cristiano is the best player in the world and is returning to his team," said Santos. "Any team is stronger with him."
Portugal host Serbia in Lisbon on March 22 and Ukraine three days later.

Football: Jurgen Klopp fumes over Vincent Kompany foul on Mohamed Salah

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp claimed Vincent Kompany should have been sent off for his ugly foul on Mohamed Salah as Liverpool's title charge was hit by a 2-1 defeat against Manchester City on Friday (Jan 4) morning (Singapore time).
Reds boss Klopp was furious that City captain Kompany escaped with only a yellow card from referee Anthony Taylor following his two-footed lunge on Salah in the first half at the Etihad Stadium.
Egypt forward Salah was able to play on after the foul, but Klopp insisted that was just luck because Kompany could have ended his season with the challenge.
The decision not to dismiss Kompany proved a crucial moment according to Klopp as City went on to snatch the points thanks to Leroy Sane's late winner after Roberto Firmino had cancelled out Sergio Aguero's opener.
"I really like Vincent Kompany but how on Earth is that not a red card? He is last man and he goes in," Klopp said.
"If he hits Mo more he is out for the season."
Unsurprisingly, Kompany disagreed with Klopp's verdict and insisted he had made a firm but fair tackle.

"I thought it was a great challenge, was it not? I got the ball, a little bit of the man but it wasn't naughty," said Kompany, who was seen urging Salah to get up following the crunching tackle.
"I didn't try to injure him. It was that or let him go through on goal."
Klopp's frustration at Kompany's escape was exacerbated as Liverpool slumped to their first league defeat this season, ending a 20-match unbeaten run.
With the table-topping Reds hoping to win the English title for the first time since 1990, letting second-placed City move back within four points of them was a significant blow.
Liverpool were rarely at their best and Klopp conceded the intensity of such a high-stakes game had affected his players.
"It was a big pressure. Very intense game. We were unlucky in our finishing moments. Unluckier than City I would say," Klopp said.
"Sane scores and the situation with Sadio when he hit the post. They had periods where they dominated the game and everybody felt the intensity.
"Our expectations are high. We can play better. You have to take the game how it is. You can't always dominate it."
Klopp insisted Liverpool would bounce back from their first setback of what has been a dream season so far.
"I have already said to the boys this is OK. We lost it but it will happen. Tonight it is not nice but it is not the biggest problem," he said.

Ajax bemoan letting final slip from their grasp

AMSTERDAM (REUTERS) - Ajax Amsterdam coach Erik ten Hag described their semi-final exit from the Champions League as "very cruel" after the Dutch side were undone by Lucas Moura's 96th minute strike for Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday (May 8).
"Football can be very beautiful and it can be very cruel. We have had to experience that today," said Ten Hag, whose young side appeared to be heading for a final showdown with Liverpool on June 1 in Madrid until Moura's last-gasp strike shattered their dreams.
Having lost the first leg in London 1-0, Tottenham secured their place in the final thanks to a hat-trick from Moura which completed a 3-2 win on the night. With the encounter ending 3-3 on aggregate, Spurs emerged triumphant on the away goals rule.
The result ended Ajax's long, and barely plausible, ride through three preliminary rounds, starting in July, to the last four of the competition.
During that incredible run, they had knocked out holders Real Madrid and Juventus and on Wednesday were seconds away from a place in the final - until it all ended in heartache.
"Overall we had a fantastic Champions League campaign, we were one second away from the final and for that our team deserves a very big compliment, I'm very proud of my players," said Ten Hag.

But the coach admitted that they let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers having been 3-0 ahead on aggregate with 45 minutes left to play.
"If you're 2-0 up, you have to make sure you win the game, and we failed to do that. In the first phase after halftime we lost our grip on the game, they played a more opportunistic game," he said.
"But after the score was level at 2-2 we dominated again and we created chances.
"It's very bitter that none of those went in, and that they scored a very fortunate goal in the last seconds, maybe even past what should have the last second."
Defender Daley Blind described the defeat as "a dream that had burst" while teenaged captain Matthijs de Ligt called it "a nightmare".
"What am I supposed to say? It's terrible. We were so close. This is a dream that has burst apart," said Blind.
De Ligt added: "It's a nightmare, like a dream that went bad.
"We played well in the first half, we had it all our way. We didn't keep up the same pressure in the second half.
"We gave silly goals away. We were so close to the final … and then the ball goes in. Unbelievable."

Football: Molde owners will support me if I stay at Manchester United, says temp boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

(REUTERS) - Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said the owners of Norwegian club Molde sent him to Old Trafford with their blessing and asked him to try to turn his temporary stint at the club into a permanent role.
Solskjaer, an ex-United striker who played under former manager Alex Ferguson, has revitalised the team since taking over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, sparking a seven-game unbeaten run in the English Premier League.
United were 11 points off the top four when Solskjaer was appointed, but have since narrowed that gap to five points ahead of their trip to Leicester later on Sunday (Feb 3), making the Norwegian a strong candidate to be given the job permanently.
Solskjaer, who was loaned to United by Molde until the end of the season, said that the Norwegian club's owners, businessmen Kjell Inge Rokke and Bjorn Rune Gjelsten, would support him if he stayed at United.
"When I rang the owner and said United had called and that he always knew that this had been my dream, he said: 'Go over, enjoy yourself - and please don't come back'," Solskjaer told the British media ahead of Sunday's match.
"Both owners wished me all the best because they knew this is something I dreamed about. To get the backing from them was fantastic. If I go back to Molde, I will do my best for them - but it depends when I go back."
Solskjaer added that he would be happy to keep advising United's hierarchy on matters such as player transfers even if he did not become permanent manager, saying his knowledge of the club's culture gave him a useful perspective.

"I am always in the position to tell United who they should look at, and that will continue after the summer if I'm not still here," he said. "I will always advise the club, especially if they ask me."

Football: Griezmann on target again as Atletico edge closer to Barca

MADRID (AFP) - Antoine Griezmann struck again as Atletico Madrid kept the pressure on Barcelona at the top of La Liga by beating in-form Getafe 2-0 on Saturday (Jan 26).
Griezmann now has 10 goals in his last 11 games, his latest helping Atletico register their sixth win in seven league matches. The only dropped points came in a respectable draw away to Sevilla.
Saul Niguez tapped in a second before half-time at the Wanda Metropolitano to complete an impressively smooth victory over a Getafe side that had lost only once, to Barcelona, in 12 matches.
Renowned for their tenacity, Getafe also finished with nine men after Djene Dakonam and Leandro Cabrera were both sent off in the final minutes.
It is no coincidence that Griezmann's surge has coincided with a consistent run for his team, which looks timely too, with Real Madrid in La Liga and Juventus in the Champions League both to come at the start of next month.
With those games in mind, Diego Simeone will hope the thigh strain that forced his captain Diego Godin off at the interval is not serious. Atletico described the substitution as a "precaution".
Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde had said earlier on Saturday that he considers Atletico the greatest threat to their title hopes from the Spanish capital and it is hard to argue given Diego Simeone's men are now just two points behind, eight closer than Real.

Barca and Real both have games in hand to come on Sunday, the former away to Girona and the latter up against Espanyol.
Griezmann could have been playing for the Catalans had his decision last summer been different but instead he is fast-becoming the sharpest thorn in their side, driving Atletico almost single-handedly at times to a sustained title challenge.
Alvaro Morata could yet join this month, even if reports in the Spanish press have suggested a deal is proving difficult to close. With Griezmann in this sort of form and Diego Costa expected back from injury next month, perhaps Atleti are not feeling quite so in need.
The Frenchman's shot in the 27th minute was too quick for goalkeeper David Soria, who was taken by surprise and beaten at his near post. Thomas Partey did well to battle through midfield and it was his pass that had teed up Griezmann on the edge of the area.
Thomas was key again to the second, his lofted pass out wide allowing Lucas Hernandez to volley first-time into the six-yard box, where Nikola Kalinic should have finished. His effort was parried out and Saul slid in the rebound.
Godin departed during the interval, replaced by Juanfran, and Getafe could have pulled one back when Jose Gimenez misjudged a ball over the top. Angel Rodriguez nipped in but Gimenez did just enough to recover.
Getafe's frustration built and boiled over at the end as Djene Dakonam was shown a second yellow card in the 88th minute for a rash challenge on Thomas Lemar and then Leandro Cabrera followed him three minutes later for applauding the referee.
It was a feisty end to a comfortable Atletico win.

Milner wants team to deliver better final ball

Milner wants team to deliver better final ball
LONDON • Following two goal-less draws, Liverpool vice-captain James Milner has urged his team to improve on their finishing by adapting better to the task of breaking down stubborn opponents.
The Reds experienced a frustrating 0-0 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, when they could not translate their 65 per cent possession into decent scoring opportunities.
Earlier last week, Jurgen Klopp's men also drew 0-0 at Anfield against German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.
"When you play for a team like Liverpool and, with the players we've got, you want to win every game no matter who it's against - and we know we can," Milner told Sky Sports ahead of today's Premier League home match against Watford.
"I just don't think we were good enough with our movements, and the final ball at times.
"Around the box, we didn't manage to open them up as much as we would have liked."
Leaders Liverpool are just a point ahead of champions Manchester City (65 points) in the Premier League table before today's round of fixtures, which will see Pep Guardiola's men take on West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.
Reds defender Andy Robertson knows how slim the margins are and has also called on his teammates to start "respecting ourselves" because Liverpool are more than capable of just one win and four draws in their last five matches in all competitions.
"Big teams like Bayern and Manchester United are full of world-class stars and they changed their way of playing to try to stop us," the left-back told the club's website.
"We need to take that as a mark of respect and not shy away from it, stand up to that and show them why there is respect."

Emery confident of win in first leg

Emery confident of win in first leg

LONDON • Unai Emery has urged Arsenal to show more consistency as they prepare to host Napoli in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final today.
The Gunners suffered a major blow in their bid to finish in the Premier League top four to qualify for next season's Champions League when they slipped to fifth spot after a 1-0 loss at Everton on Sunday.
But they can also book a place in Europe's top club competition if they win the second-tier Europa League.
The manager said yesterday: "It's a big test. We want to play against the best teams. Napoli are one of them. It's going to be difficult, but we have confidence. We need to be very consistent in two matches.
"Our idea is to win and not concede goals. We are prepared for extra time or penalties."
He will have to wait on injuries to Laurent Koscielny and Granit Xhaka while Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could return after starting on the bench at Everton.
Arsenal have been formidable at home with seven straight wins at the Emirates in all competitions, including second-leg comeback wins over Bate Borisov and Rennes in the Europa League.
And that will not be good news for Napoli, who have not kept a clean sheet in any competition since beating Red Bull Salzburg in the last-16 first leg on March 7. The Italian side also lost to struggling Empoli before a disappointing draw with Genoa on Sunday.
But Carlo Ancelotti's side will be boosted by the availability of forward Lorenzo Insigne, who has scored 13 goals this season, after he played 23 minutes against Genoa.
Arsenal's London rivals Chelsea appear to have an easier route. They head to the Czech Republic for their first leg against Slavia Prague buoyed by Eden Hazard's double against West Ham on Monday.
