Old Trafford no longer a 'scary' place to go to, says Pep

LONDON â€¢ Pep Guardiola believes that Manchester United have lost the fear factor and that his Manchester City side are not afraid to go to Old Trafford any more in recent years.
For City, the Premier League title is at stake with Guardiola's men needing to win their remaining four matches to be sure of becoming the first side since United a decade ago to retain the title.
Those days of dominance are long gone for the Red Devils with just a place in the top four and Champions League qualification their target this season.
United, sixth in the standings, will also have to restore some sense of pride after a 4-0 thrashing at Everton last Sunday.
Ahead of today's Manchester derby in the Premier League, Guardiola said: "This club (City) in the last decade grew a lot, it's not scary any more to go to Old Trafford, but we have to play at our best.
"Four games left and we have to win our four games to retain the title. It is not an easy place to go but, at the same time, it is a nice place to go.
"We know exactly what we have to do and we're going to go there to do a big game.
"It's true that we've done better than them over the last three years, but it is about winning titles, not beating United."

Should City fail to win at Old Trafford, Liverpool - historically United's fiercest rivals - will be just three games away from a first league title in 29 years.
The Reds have already set their highest ever points tally in the Premier League era of 88 to lead City by two points.
However, Guardiola's men have a game in hand and, should they move top once more with a win today, they would just need to see off Burnley, Leicester and Brighton to guarantee the title.
City could not have picked a better possible time to face United, but Guardiola also insisted that he is not getting carried away by their rivals' poor form of late.
"I expect the best United tomorrow, I am sure. They are proud. Prepare the game as always, their strong points, their weak points and try to win the game," the City manager added.
"It is a derby and, all the times we play against United, the derbies are always special games and the players do their best for the fans and the club."
The Spaniard also expressed his support for United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, saying that managers do not have it easy when things do not go their way.
"I am close to Solskjaer, I understand his position perfectly," he added. "I understand his position because it happens to all the managers around the world.
"It is the reality, we have to accept it. If not, stay at home. I understand him perfectly and I am with him."

LONDON(AFP) - Real Madrid have knocked Manchester United off the top of Deloitte's Football Money League, but the Premier League still flexed its financial muscle, with all of England's "Big Six" featuring in the top 10 for the first time.
The Deloitte list ranked clubs on how much money they earn from broadcasting, commercial deals and match-day revenues during the 2017-18 season.
United had spent the last two years in first place in the financial charts, but they have slipped to third behind European champions Real and Spanish giants Barcelona.
Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Paris St Germain, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham make up the rest of the top 10.
Dan Jones, the report's author and a partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "European football remains a bull market.
"We have seen Real Madrid shatter records, becoming the first club to break the three-quarters of a billion euro mark and claim a record 12th Money League title in the process."
After winning a third consecutive Champions League title, Real generated a record Â£674.6 million (S$1.2 billion), giving them the Money League top spot for the 12th time and the first since 2014-15.
All the British clubs were slightly affected by a 3 per cent year-on-year decline in the value of sterling against the euro.
United's fall was influenced by their early exit from the Champions League in the last 16 last season and the remarkable growth in the Spanish duo's commercial income.
While revenues at Old Trafford grew by only 2 per cent, they still earned Â£590 million last season and the latest forecasts suggest they should surge past Â£615 million this season.
Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham, the north Londoners making the top 10 for only the second time, all enjoyed healthy increases in their turnover.
Liverpool's run to the Champions League saw their revenue increase by a massive Â£90.6 million, largely thanks to Â£222.6 million in broadcast earnings.
While the extended stay at the national stadium is starting to annoy fans, the Wembley effect helped Tottenham increase their matchday revenues by Â£26.5 million.
Arsenal saw their income fall by nearly Â£30 million and they dropped from sixth to ninth in the table, a slide that illustrates the importance of Champions League TV money to every big club's bottom line.
Further down the table, Everton and West Ham hold on to their 17th and 20th placings, respectively, but Leicester and Southampton dropped out of the top 20 to 22nd and 23rd.
Newcastle, however, climbed to 19th, giving the Premier League nine teams in the top 20, one fewer than last year.
Taken together, the top 20 clubs, who all come from one of Europe's 'big five' leagues, earned Â£7.4 billion, up 6 per cent on last year.

'Electric' Sterling has boss purring

LONDON â€¢ When Raheem Sterling grew up within the shadow of Wembley, he would ride around on his bike marvelling at the gleaming stadium, dreaming of playing there.
He even has a tattoo of him as a young boy staring up in awe at the arch. Life now imitates artwork and Wembley now marvels at him.
The 24-year-old scored not one but three goals in the 5-0 demolition of the Czech Republic on Friday - the first England player to notch a hat-trick at the national stadium since Jermain Defoe against Bulgaria in 2010.
It was the perfect exhibition of Sterling's myriad talents and gave England the ideal start in qualifying for Euro 2020.
Perhaps most encouragingly of all, is evidence that he is finally transferring his Manchester City form onto the international stage.
England manager Gareth Southgate praised the forward's "devastating" performance and the manner in which he has turned around his international career, after going three years and 27 appearances without a goal.

Goals Raheem Sterling has scored in his last three games for England. He had not managed a single goal in his previous 27 appearances.

"Raheem was brilliant, electric all night," Southgate said.
"He's in a really confident moment, not only on the field but off the field he's so mature and comfortable in himself.
"So I'm delighted for him to get the reaction that he did from the crowd. We can't hide from the fact he's had difficult moments with England and he's turned that full circle.
"The goals in Spain (two goals in a Nations League win in October) were an important moment for him; you could see the release that had brought. He's hungry for those goals and I thought he was devastating tonight."
Sterling's efficiency on the pitch was so good that he had 96 per cent passing accuracy, and his three shots brought all three goals alongside a Harry Kane penalty - which he won - and a Tomas Kalas own goal.
But it was not simply his pace and persistence that opened up the Czechs time and again. It was the intelligence that defined his involvement, his awareness of opportunity and ruthlessness in exploiting chances, shredding the visitors' defence.
His latest performance was just another reminder why Southgate believes it is between Sterling or Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk to win the individual awards as the Premier League's outstanding player this season.
Not that Sterling was the only player in England's colours to excel, though.
The Three Lions finished the night with Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, making his debut as a second-half substitute, with both 18-year-olds menacing their opponents from the wings.
Declan Rice, who switched allegiance from Ireland only earlier this month, also earned his first international cap in the second half.
"To finish with two young wingers was really exciting," added Southgate.
"They don't feel inhibited around the camp, so they don't feel inhibited on the pitch and you could see that by the way they played.
"I thought Jadon made a really good contribution for the first goal. Callum had an opportunity to play with the freedom he's shown all week, and I thought he displayed that."
England, following an impressive semi-final run at last year's World Cup, are indeed looking promising with this young side.
When the Mexican wave started at Wembley it was not one of those occasions when it felt as if the crowd were trying to make their own entertainment.
They were well and truly entertained, and will be looking for more of the same kind of performance from Sterling and Co when England travel to Montenegro for their second qualifier tomorrow.

LONDON (AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Jurgen Klopp turned the air blue as the Liverpool manager celebrated his side's incredible Champions League semi-final success against Barcelona with a profanity-laced victory speech.
Klopp's men powered to their second successive Champions League final with a stunning 4-0 win against the Spanish champions in Tuesday's (May 7) second leg at Anfield.
Liverpool had been written off after losing the first leg 3-0, but doubles from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum completed one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history.
It was all too much for the always passionate Klopp as the German let his emotions run wild in an entertaining post-match interview.
Speaking to BT Sport, Klopp said: "It's 10 past 10, most of your children are probably in bed but these boys are f****** talented giants. It's unbelievable.
"Fine me if you want. I'm not native so I don't have better words for it.
"The whole game. The whole performance was too much. It was overwhelming.
"I watched in my life so many football games but I can't remember many like this.
"Winning is already difficult, but winning with a clean sheet?
"We played against maybe the best team in world. I don't know how the boys did it."

Klopp saluted his spirited players for refusing to accept they were out after losing the first leg by such a large margin.
"It's the best phase of football. There are more important things in the world. But creating this emotional atmosphere together is so special. It's all about the players," he said.
"The mix of potential and unbelievable heart is just a mix I never saw before. You have to be confident in a game like this.
"I saw James Milner crying after the game on the pitch, it means so much to all of us."
The victory was all the more astonishing because Liverpool were playing with the injured Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita.
Klopp turned to Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri to fill in for Salah and Firmino and the German was delighted that both seized their rare chances to shine.
"Divock and Shaq didn't play a lot. Putting a performance in like that, it was so important. It shows what's possible in football. It's so nice. It's really nice," he said.
Liverpool are in their ninth European Cup final as they look to win the competition for a sixth time and will face Ajax or Tottenham in the Madrid showpiece.
It is an outcome that was unthinkable at kick-off, but Klopp claimed he had a feeling Liverpool could rattle Barca if they played off the cuff.
That was never better demonstrated than in the audacious corner routine that led to Origi's winner, with Trent Alexander-Arnold appearing to walk away from the set-piece before quickly whipping it in to catch Barca off guard as the unmarked Belgian slotted home.
"We had to be serious. But we needed to be cheeky as well. It was necessary," Klopp added.
"I saw the ball flying in the goal, I didn't see the corner. I didn't see who took the corner. (Liverpool substitute) Ben Woodburn said, 'What happened?.
"Barcelona defend predictable things well. But you need to be unpredictable at moments."

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool moved six points clear at the top of the Premier League as the leaders eased past Newcastle 4-0 at Anfield and Manchester City were beaten for the second time in five days, 2-1 at Leicester.
Tottenham leapfrog City into second after thrashing Bournemouth 5-0, while Manchester United's perfect start under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued with Paul Pogba scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Huddersfield.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has tried in recent days to stress that it is still far too early for his side to be talking of ending a near three-decade wait to win the title in December.
However, another routine win and a 12th clean sheet in 19 Premier League games will do little to dampen expectations ahead of a huge week for Liverpool with Arsenal visiting Anfield on Saturday before a visit to City on Jan 3.
"We play City soon - if I was them I would think there is only four points because we still have to play them, then we play Arsenal before then as well," said Klopp.
"The only thing that matters to us is the performance and keeping that level of performance. It's good but that's all. Tottenham are flying - they had a difficult summer but they are doing brilliant."
After a slow start Liverpool went in front through an unlikely source when Dejan Lovren volleyed home after 12 minutes.
It was a far more familiar marksman who made the game safe when Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot two minutes into the second half to briefly move into a three-way lead as the league's top scorer with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane.
Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho's first Liverpool goal rounded off the scoring.

'FANTASTIC' PEREIRA GOAL

City boss Pep Guardiola made three changes from the side that lost 3-2 to Crystal Palace on Saturday with Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne returning, but even they couldn't prevent a third defeat in four Premier League games.
"We have to accept it, we have to realise that we have to work harder and try to get immediately one good result and get our confidence back," said Guardiola.
Aguero set up Bernardo Silva to give the champions a perfect start, but Marc Albrighton levelled just five minutes later.
City dominated possession throughout, but after Andros Townsend's incredible volley for Palace on Saturday they were hit by another wonder strike when Ricardo Pereira fired home nine minutes from time.
"It was another fantastic goal against us. There are games when your opponents have clear chances and don't score and games when they score goals like this," added Guardiola.
A terrible afternoon for City was compounded late on by a red card for Fabian Delph.

SPURS RUN RIOT AGAIN

As City flounder, Spurs are firing back into the title race as Mauricio Pochettino's men have now scored 11 goals in four days.
"We are in a very good position, but Liverpool and Manchester City are the real contenders," insisted a cautious Pochettino.
"It is one thing to be a point above them, but Manchester City are the reigning champions and Liverpool are doing fantastic. We are between them and there is still a lot of work to do."
Fresh from a 6-2 hammering of Everton, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura put Tottenham 3-0 up before half-time at Wembley.
Kane then got his goal just after the hour mark before Son recorded his second double in as many games.
Pogba was again to the fore as Solskjaer's dream start continued unabated in his first outing in charge at Old Trafford.
Nemanja Matic tapped home from close range to give the hosts a half-time advantage.
Pogba provided three assists on his return to the starting line-up in a 5-1 win at Cardiff at the weekend after being benched towards the end of Jose Mourinho's reign.
And the French World Cup winner showed the goalscoring threat he also poses from midfield by striking twice in 14 minutes as United moved back to within five points of the top four.
"This is Manchester United. When you score a first, you want a second. When you score a second, you want a third," said Solskjaer, who wants United to take advantage of upcoming games with Bournemouth and Newcastle.
"You need momentum. The next two games will be massive for us. Coming into those games with confidence is great."
Everton bounced back from their Tottenham thrashing by inflicting similar punishment on Burnley with a 5-1 victory at Turf Moor.
At the bottom Cardiff moved three points clear of the relegation zone by holding out for a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.
But Fulham remain rooted in the bottom three as Wolves struck late to secure a share of the points in a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Tottenham Hotspur showed why manager Mauricio Pochettino is a wanted man by thrashing Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park on Sunday (Dec 23) to close to within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Spurs have had to cope with the unwanted attention of Pochettino being linked with the Manchester United job following Jose Mourinho's sacking this week.
But they showed no signs of being distracted as they roared back from a goal down thanks to doubles from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen also on target.
Fatigue may yet still derail Tottenham's bid to win a first trophy under Pochettino with Spurs still involved in four competitions.
But with Liverpool facing Arsenal and Manchester City in a top of the table clash in their next three games over the festive period, Tottenham have the opportunity to haul themselves into a three-way title race if they maintain the standards set at Goodison.
"I think everyone is talking about Liverpool and Man City, but we are just doing well as we normally do," said Kane.
"We've had a great week, we've got games coming up thick and fast but games we can win." Kane had chipped into the side-netting and Jordan Pickford produced a fine save to deny England team-mate Kieran Trippier in the early stages.
But it was Everton who struck first in a wildly open contest when Theo Walcott stabbed home at the near post from Dominic Calvert-Lewin's cross.
Marco Silva's men could even have been 2-0 up had Calvert-Lewin not been penalised for a push on Davinson Sanchez when heading home moments later.
But Spurs looked as if they could score with almost every attack and were soon on level terms with the aid of a Pickford error.
The England number one rushed from his goal but only succeeded in getting in the way of his own defender Kurt Zouma and Son took advantage with a wonderful finish from a narrow angle.
"We dominated the game from the start, we created so many chances, so we were unlucky to be 1-0 down," said Son.
"But we bounced back, showed our character and our mentality. We are happy to get three points here." .

Tottenham blitz

Once back on level terms, Spurs were relentless as Pickford denied Son a second but Alli charged into the box to sweep home the rebound to turn the game around.
Kane is now just one goal behind Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in the race for the Premier League golden boot and showed his predatory instincts to side-foot into an empty net after Trippier's fine free-kick came back off the post three minutes before half-time.
Both teams face the least rest time of any Premier League side over the festive period with another three games to come between now and New Year's Day.
However, there was no let up in the pace of the game after the break as Eriksen produced a technically perfect controlled volley from the edge of the box to make it 4-1.
Three minutes later Everton's deficit was back to two as Gylfi Sigurdsson dribbled across the whole Tottenham defence before firing back across Hugo Lloris.
Yet, any hope of a fightback was extinguished just after the hour mark when Son's fine control cushioned Erik Lamela's pass before he finished through the legs of Pickford.
It was announced this week that the South Korean will go to the Asian Cup in January despite already representing his country at the World Cup and Asian Games this year.
And Son showed why he will be missed by his club in January once more with an inch-perfect cross for Kane to slide in for his second of the afternoon 16 minutes from time.
