Football: Even if they come on for just five minutes, I trust the player will give 100 per cent, says Nazri Nasir

SINGAPORE - There is no secret in motivating footballers. Just one simple word - trust.
It captures Nazri Nasir's management philosophy and what he tried to instil during his short stint in charge of Singapore during March's AirMarine Cup in Malaysia.
The former national captain said: "I fully believe in them. I told them when you're selected to be part of this team, it's because I trust you.
"When they're called on in the game, even if it's just five minutes, I trust that they will give their 100 per cent and when they're given a chance, they will do well."
The Lions, their morale low after failing to qualify for the semi-finals of last November's AFF Suzuki Cup, responded with some creditable performances at the friendly quadrangular tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
They beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before losing 5-4 on penalties.
Nazri, 48, who was recently appointed assistant to new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida, said: "They responded to me very well and I always try to win the players' trust, that's the most important thing and it showed during the AirMarine Cup.
"I hope they can continue the momentum and that's where I come in also to motivate the players.
"That was a good experience for me to get to know the players better. Now, I can help him (Yoshida) get to know them as well by sharing their mentality, strengths and weaknesses.
"With his coaching ideas and me as I can interact with players easily and understand them better, these will blend together to build a good chemistry in the team."

 
 
 
He and Yoshida face their first test as a partnership in the coming days. The Republic, ranked 160th, face the Solomon Islands (world No. 139) and Myanmar (140) on Saturday (June 8) and next Tuesday (June 11).
The upcoming friendlies at the National Stadium were arranged to help Singapore gain crucial Fifa ranking points for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
Singapore captain Hariss Harun said Nazri, who skippered the Lions to victory at the 1998 AFF Championship, is an important presence in the national set-up.
Hariss noted:"His role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches. He also has a lot of experience to impart and with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs (Kashiwa Reysol, Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu), we need to adapt as fast as we can.
"Our results at the AirMarine Cup gave us a lot of confidence so we just have to try to continue that momentum. We have a new coach too so the boys are eager to show what we have and I hope this will translate to a good performance in the coming games."
After Nazri retired in 2008, he joined his former club Tampines Rovers as general manager and was later an assistant coach for the now-defunct LionsXII and Young Lions.
He said: "Yoshida brings different ideas and playing styles. He's very detailed and requires high intensity.
"He wants to bring Singapore to a higher level and with his guidance and my local experience, I'm sure we can help the team improve. "

LONDON • Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has backed his former teammate and caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take over the hot seat on a full-time basis in the summer.
The Norwegian, who replaced Jose Mourinho in December, has made a compelling case for a permanent appointment after guiding United to seven wins and a draw in the Premier League.
With the Red Devils just two points off the top four and displaying a free-flowing attacking style that was sorely missing under Solskjaer's predecessor, Rooney felt the 45-year-old had proven himself.
"Ole's a fantastic person. It'd be nice to see Ole continue with this form and get a shot at the job on a permanent basis," United's all-time record scorer, on 253 goals, told CNN World Sport in an interview.
However, if the Old Trafford hierarchy decides against hiring Solskjaer, then Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino, the early bookmakers' favourite, would be the "right guy" in his eyes.
Rooney added: "If the club go to choose from somewhere else, then in my opinion, Pochettino would be (the best alternative)."
However, the Argentinian, who joined Spurs from Southampton in 2014 and has guided the north London club to consecutive top-three finishes in the league, has yet to win silverware in his managerial career.
While Solskjaer has fared little better, having won only domestic trophies in his country, BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton felt that should not count against the 45-year-old as he had "transformed the club".
He told the TV channel: "In the early stages, they said these were games he should be winning, but I disagree with that.
"They have their belief back, why not give it to him? He's proved himself, albeit in a short space of time, but it's not just the results, it's the manner in which they've done it. The style of play, he's got all of the big players onside.
"It would be the sensible thing to do. It would be more of a risk not to give it to him."
Former United midfielder Jonathan Greening agreed with the former Blackburn Rovers striker, telling BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast that Solskjaer had won over the dressing room and "brought the confidence and enjoyment back to the players".
He added: "They're still playing for the shirt, but probably the attacking players have got a bit more of a licence to rotate, attack, get forward without actually doing the defensive duties. Solskjaer has let them off the leash a little bit."
However, not all have been sold on the increasing calls for the former United striker to take on one of football's biggest jobs on a long-term basis.
Former United midfielder Paul Ince, who has been one of Solskjaer's most vociferous critics since his interim appointment, told BBC Sport "anyone could have come in and done the same".
He said: "I have got absolutely nothing against Ole but, when I looked at teams who have done something similar and given permanent jobs to interim managers, not many of them lasted very long.
"Roberto di Matteo at Chelsea is a good example of that, as is Craig Shakespeare at Leicester.
"It could be the same with Solskjaer - no matter what he achieves this season, it will not mean he is the right man to take the club forward."
The club, who will face Fulham in the league on Saturday, are expected to make a decision on their manager at the end of the season.

LONDON (AFP) - Harry Kane was on Thursday (Feb 21) labelled an "animal" by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino as the striker battles to prove his fitness in time for Tottenham's weekend clash with Burnley.
The England captain has returned to training from an ankle injury that kept him out for seven games, with his club sitting third in the Premier League.
"He is very good and I think we need to assess him in one more training session and then decide," Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference.
"He is doing very well and maybe he is going to be available at Burnley.
"Harry is an animal and wants to be ready as soon as possible. In the last 10 days he has been fantastic and having him back available is a fantastic boost for everyone."
Kane was initially expected to be out until the middle of March and he believes he is ready to start but Pochettino will not allow his judgement to be swayed by his player's opinion.
"I don't care if he wants to play or not," said the Argentine.
"I'll decide with my coaching staff and the doctor and sports science staff.
"Every player that came from an injury or illness, it's about the structure, when he's possible to play or not.
"If you ask him 10 days ago, he was ready to play. But the last word is always myself. I take the risk, the decision for the team."
The prospect of having the Kane back for heavyweight clashes against Chelsea, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the next fortnight is a major boost for Spurs.
Kane has a history of shaking off injuries quicker than expected but Pochettino emphasised the need to plan his return carefully.
"When it's a massive injury it's completely different," said the Spurs boss.
"We're so happy that in the last 10 days he was fantastic, back in training again, and he can be available again. It's going to be a massive impact for everyone."
Kane's return leaves only Dele Alli in the treatment room as the England international recovers from a hamstring injury.
Pochettino put a one to two-week timescale on a possible return, which could see Alli back for the Champions League last-16 second-leg tie against Borussia Dortmund on March 5.
With Liverpool not playing until Sunday and Manchester City in League Cup final action, Spurs could close the gap at the top of the table to just two points if they beat Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.

LONDON (AFP) - Diogo Jota's hat-trick piled pressure on Leicester manager Claude Puel as the Wolves midfielder's last-gasp strike secured a thrilling 4-3 win on Saturday (Jan 19).
Nuno Espirito Santo's side blew a two-goal lead and then wasted a 3-2 advantage, but still finished with all three points in one of the Premier League's games of the season at Molineux.
Jota was Wolves' hero with his winner deep into stoppage-time, capping a dramatic finale that left Puel holding his head in disbelief at the final whistle.

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona forward Luis Suarez has been ruled out of playing in the China Cup with Uruguay after spraining his ankle for his club at the weekend.
Suarez, 32, is expected to miss between 10 and 15 days after limping off late in Sunday's (March 17) 4-1 win at Real Betis in La Liga.
"He will... undertake his recovery with the FC Barcelona medical team, having been withdrawn from the Uruguayan national team squad," the club said in a statement Monday.
Suarez's absence adds to that of Edinson Cavani for Uruguay after the Paris Saint-Germain striker failed to shake off a thigh injury for the trip to China.
Oscar Tabarez's squad travel to Nanning to take on take on Uzbekistan on March 21, with the winner meeting China or Thailand in the final four days later.
Suarez scored his 18th league goal of the season at Betis to draw level with Diego Forlan for the most goals scored by a Uruguayan in Spain's top flight with 128.
