Football: Manchester City stars pay for 26 coaches to take fans to Wembley

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City players will pay for 26 coaches to take fans to Wembley next month for the FA Cup final, the club announced on Friday (April 19).
"The support from our fans throughout the season has been nothing short of incredible. Travelling to so many games in league and Cup competitions, both home and away, is not easy to do and is something that every player in our squad values and appreciates," said captain Vincent Kompany.
City, who have already won the Community Shield and League Cup at Wembley this season, will face Watford in the FA Cup final at the London venue on May 18.
By that time, they may also be Premier League champions although their hopes of winning the Champions League were dashed in an epic quarter-final loss to Tottenham in midweek.
"Although the result was not the one that we had hoped for, it was very special to hear our fans in full voice for ninety minutes backing the team," added Kompany.
"We still have so much to fight for this season, and this is our way of saying thank you to them for being with us every step of the way."
The coaches for the 680km round-trip to London will be funded by each of the 26 players in the first-team squad.

Part of Jurgen Klopp's hard work is to find a way of harnessing the desperation to end a title drought of nearly three decades positively, rather than letting the nerves of what promises to be a thrilling run-in become a hindrance.
Tension is already apparent in the stands as much as on the pitch, after the unexpected slip-ups of the past week.
"You get that feeling as well from the crowd and it's not really necessary at the moment," said defender Virgil van Dijk. "Obviously everyone wants to win so bad and that's what we want as well but sometimes you need to be very patient."

LONDON • Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are "playthings of a state" who should be kicked out of European competition for violating Financial Fair Play rules, the LaLiga president has said.
Javier Tebas, who has headed the Spanish football's top league for the past six years, warned that the two clubs were putting the entire football industry at risk because of their methods and huge spending power.
"There are clubs who could not care less what their real incomes are when they want to sign a player because they receive incomes from a state," Tebas said, citing Abu Dhabi-backed City and Qatar-owned PSG by name.
"It forces other clubs into an economic situation which is really living on the edge. It skews the balance of the entire European football structure.
"This is no longer sport. This is no longer an industry. It becomes more like a toy, the plaything of a state. And when it's a plaything, kids start playing with other kids. You end up ruining the entire system.
"Manchester City and PSG have created (this effect) across the whole of Europe because the rest of the clubs in Europe want (more) money to compete with these guys."
City last week reacted angrily after a Uefa investigation into allegations of financial fair play irregularities, which may lead to a Champions League ban, was sent for a final judgment at the governing body.
The English champions argue the investigatory chamber is mistaken and has not fully considered the club's response to allegations they mis-stated multi-million-pound sponsorships in their submissions more than five years ago.
Tebas also said English clubs would be making a huge mistake if they backed a new lucrative European Super League as it would ruin domestic football.
He criticised five English clubs - City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea - for being "dishonest" because they had not been transparent whether they support a proposed Super League, which could come into effect in 2024.
One proposal could mean the Champions League format is replaced with four groups of eight teams, with qualification based on historical performance rather than results in domestic competitions.
When the proposals surfaced, the Premier League insisted that all 20 clubs unanimously agreed to protect the domestic league but Tebas said that the leading clubs were saying one thing and doing another.
"This is not a joke what is going on right now. The history of English football and its clubs is in danger.
"National leagues have a culture of dozens of years of rivalries between clubs so the Super League is going to create a disconnect with fans."

The 47-year-old faces a testing week that could prove crucial in arresting his team's slump and reviving the defence of their title. Lose to the Saints today and third-placed City, with 44 points, could face a double-digit gap after hosting leaders Liverpool on Thursday.
Guardiola, however, believes that his men will rediscover their confidence once they start winning.
"We are not in good form and winning will help us a lot. (It) will not come from above. It will come if we do something and that's what we have to try to do.

Guardiola has always insisted he will do no business in this window, waiting until the summer to strengthen a squad that, until the current run, looked deep enough to cope with any number of injuries or loss of form.
"When we created the squad at the beginning of the season, it was not to go to the January window except if we have problems," the Spaniard said last month.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who will captain Southampton today and who played under Guardiola at Bayern Munich, feels that his former boss' obsessive attention to detail is a double-edged sword. It has brought much success but could also be the reason why the champions have suffered a slump.
The 23-year-old Danish midfielder, who joined the Saints in 2016, admires Guardiola but thinks sometimes his analysing of a match is too intense even for the Spaniard.
"He is the most demanding person, not only coach, that I have ever met," Hojbjerg said.
"We sit on the bus after we have won and he sits on the bus watching the game and then he is in his office with two laptops and a television (set) and he is analysing.
"Maybe that's what makes him the greatest. But also maybe that is what makes him lose, because it is too much, he drowns."

With one minute left and the game against Skeid tied at 2-2, five Raufoss IL players surged into the opponents' penalty box when Mikkel Maigaard whipped in a hopeful cross from the right.
Ikhsan was the first to react to meet the cross, improvising with an overhead kick to send the ball into the bottom corner for a dramatic winner and his first competitive goal for Raufoss.
The 20-year-old had replaced Ryan Doghman in the 75th minute when his team were 2-1 down, and made his cameo count.
He told The Straits Times: "I never expected my first competitive goal to come from a bicycle kick. It feels even more amazing when it's the match-winner. I will keep working hard to earn more playing time and try to score more goals."
The 3-2 away win extended Raufoss' unbeaten league run to four games, and propelled the second-tier Norwegian side to fourth place on 13 points after seven games.
They trail Aalesund (16 points), Sandefjord (15) and Start (on goal difference) in the 16-team 1. Division. The top two teams earn automatic promotion while third to sixth enter the play-offs for the last slot.
Raufoss coach Christian Johnsen said: "It was about time, regardless of the result, to let him play. Today, he was really good when he came on. He has speed and physicality, and he is also a nice and humble lad who works hard, so we know he has great potential.

Ikhsan's father, Fandi Ahmad, was the only other Singaporean to accomplish the feat with 11 league goals for Dutch team Groningen from 1983 to 1985.
Remarkably, Ikhsan's goal comes after just 92 minutes of league action. Even though he has played in the last six league matches, they were all substitute appearances.
Fandi told ST: "I'm happy for him. He has been wanting to show what he can do, and he injected life into his team when they were down.
"I told him the coach has faith in him, and that's why he has been getting playing time. He just needs to be confident."
Ikhsan's older brother Irfan, 21, is also flourishing with Thai League 2 side BG Pathum United.
With 31 points from 12 games, Pathum are top of the table and on track for a swift return to the top tier.
And the Singapore international defender has played his part with six clean sheets, three goals and two Man-of-the-Match awards.
Fandi said: "I hope more of our footballers venture overseas and improve from playing in a strong league because that can only be good for the national team."

SINGAPORE - He was unveiled as Singapore football's new national coach on Thursday (May 30) but Tatsuma Yoshida wasted little time in stressing that teamwork within the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) will be crucial to leading the Lions to success.
The 44-year-old is the first Japanese as well as the youngest coach in this millennium to lead the Republic. He has been appointed on a two-year deal and replaces V. Sundram Moorthy, who was the last permanent Singapore coach before he vacated the post in April 2018.
Since then, former national captains Fandi Ahmad and Nazri Nasir have both served on an interim and caretaker basis.
Yoshida's first assignments will be the upcoming international home friendlies against Solomon Islands (June 8) and Myanmar (June 11).
Speaking at a press conference at the Jalan Besar Stadium, where the FAS is based, Yoshida said: "I am honoured to be appointed Singapore's national team coach and thankful for the trust that FAS has placed in me. This position bears heavy responsibilities which I will undertake with commitment and pride.
"While I am aware that this is no easy task, I believe in the potential that Singapore football has to reach greater heights and success on the international stage and look forward to embarking on this journey with the players and fans.
"Teamwork is crucial in order for us to succeed which is why I am pleased to have local legends like (national Under-22 coach) Fandi and Nazri on board this journey. The synergy in my partnership with Fandi will be of utmost importance as the Under-22 team is critical to the long-term objectives of the national team."

The FAS earlier in May appointed 53-year-old Australian Joseph Palatsides as its new technical director after Belgian Michel Sablon stepped down in December 2018.
FAS president Lim Kia Tong said Yoshida will be assisted by Nazri, who served as caretaker coach for two games earlier this year.
Lim said: "We decided to shift our search within Asia. I spoke to the Japan FA president and sought his help in recommendation. Tatsuma comes highly recommended by their technical department.

 
"His experience with youth development was a key factor that the selection committee took into consideration. We are confident he will be able to bring about the high intensity, fast-moving style that we and fans look for."
Born in Chiba prefecture, Yoshida was a central midfielder and started his playing career with hometown club Kashiwa Reysol before turning out for Kyoto Sanga and Montedio Yamagata.
In 2002, he signed for Jurong FC and played under Sundram, then player-coach for the Cobras.
After hanging up his boots that year, Yoshida returned to Reysol, where he rose through the ranks from youth-team coach to technical director and then the head coach. While at Reysol, he helped to produce some national players like Marseille right-back Hiroki Sakai.
However, he then lasted just one season each as head coach of Reysol (2015) and Albirex Niigata (2016). His last head coach assignment was at Ventforet Kofu from 2017 to last year, and has no previous experience helming a national team.

SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Cardiff City's Kenneth Zohore struck deep into stoppage time to secure a crucial 2-1 win on Saturday (Feb 9) at fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton, who thought they had snatched a point with a 91st-minute equaliser.
Southampton's Jack Stephens bundled the ball into the net in added time, but Cardiff went back up the other end and substitute Zohore scuffed home a shot to give Cardiff only their second away win of the season.
After a slow start, Southampton upped the tempo in the second half but they were hit by a sucker punch when centre back Sol Bamba pounced, volleying home Callum Paterson's knockdown from Cardiff's first corner of the game in the 69th minute.
The win lifted Cardiff out of the relegation zone and into 15th place, while Southampton will slip into the bottom three if Burnley get at least a point in Saturday's late kickoff against Brighton and Hove Albion.
It was another emotional day for Cardiff following the recovery of the body of striker Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane that crashed taking him to join up with the Welsh club after he signed from French side Nantes.
The game was preceded by a minute's silence for the 28-year-old Argentine, who was Cardiff's record signing, and the players of both teams wore black armbands.
After beating Bournemouth 2-0 last week, the victory over Southampton marked the first time Cardiff have won back-to-back games in the Premier League, and Bamba believes his side had a little help from above.

 
"It can't get better, scoring the first goal in front of our fans. A lot goes through your mind. I know Emiliano Sala was looking from up there so it's good to get the three points," he said.
After picking up nine points from the first five league games of 2019, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was left to rue his side's defending.
"If you score an equaliser in added time, you have to take a minimum of one point. It would help us a lot for the mentality, the atmosphere and the feeling for the future," he said.
"What we did now was to roll a big stone in our way, and to remove that will take a lot of time."
