Football: Man City hit humiliated Chelsea for six to go top once more

MANCHESTER (AFP) – Sergio Aguero grabbed a hat-trick as Manchester City scored four times inside 25 minutes to thrash Chelsea 6-0 and leapfrog Liverpool again to top spot in the Premier League on goal difference on Sunday (Feb 10).
Aguero should have had even more than three as the Argentine missed a glorious early chance and hit the bar in the second-half in a humiliating afternoon for Maurizio Sarri’s men.
Raheem Sterling started and ended the scoring and Ilkay Gundogan also netted in the first quarter of the game as City ended what could have been a testing week with a trip to Everton in between the visits of Arsenal and Chelsea with maximum points.
Jurgen Klopp’s men maintain the advantage of a game in hand, but handed a reprieve by Liverpool’s draws against Leicester and West Ham in recent weeks, City look determined to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League.  Chelsea on the other hand slip to sixth with the scale of the defeat sure to raise further doubts over Sarri’s future.
A 4-0 defeat to Bournemouth in their last away game was Chelsea’s heaviest league defeat since 1996.  And this was their worst loss in any competition since 1991 after failing to recover from Sterling’s fourth-minute opener.
Eden Hazard went to sleep from Kevin de Bruyne’s quickly taken free-kick and Bernardo Silva had acres of space to cross for the England international to fire home.  Pep Guardiola had described this match as a “final” for his side given that Chelsea had a week to prepare, while City ground out a 2-0 win at Everton on Wednesday.
Guardiola fell to the floor in exasperation when Aguero somehow side-footed wide with his easiest chance of the game moments later.

But the Catalan coach need not have worried that would prove a costly miss as Aguero made amends in stunning fashion by blasting into the top corner from 25 yards to double City’s after just 13 minutes.  Aguero had a simple task to make it 3-0 six minutes later when he pounced on Ross Barkley’s slack header towards his own goal.
And Gundogan’s shot from the edge of the area then had too much power for the world’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to compound Chelsea’s woes.
Such was the defensive collapse at the other end, Gonzalo Higuain had little chance to shine but the Argentine striker was unfortunate not to score his third goal in as many league starts for Chelsea when Ederson turned over his dipping volley five minutes before the break.
That was as much of a response as Chelsea mustered, though, and it only got worse for Sarri’s chances of keeping his job in the second period.  Aguero missed his first chance to seal a second hat-trick in two games when he headed against the crossbar.
But when Sterling was too quick for Cesar Azpilicueta and chopped down by the Spaniard inside the area, Aguero coolly slotted home from the penalty spot to move level with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as the Premier League’s top scorer on 17 for the season.
Even after Aguero went off to a standing ovation, City’s strength in depth shone through as Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and David Silva came off the bench.
And Silva’s pass opened the visitors up again for the sixth as he picked out Oleksandr Zinchenko who crossed for Sterling to tap home.

LONDON (AFP) - Eden Hazard must deliver more to realise his full potential and help dig Chelsea out of a slump in form, manager Maurizio Sarri said on Wednesday (Jan 23).
Sarri heavily criticised his side's mental strength after they slipped to a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal on Saturday, labelling his players "difficult to motivate".
However, Sarri's tactics are also under the spotlight as he has persisted with playing Hazard in an unfamiliar centre-forward position over the past month.
Chelsea look set to remedy their striker problem with the imminent arrival of Gonzalo Higuain on loan, who scored 38 goals in one season under Sarri at Napoli in 2015/16.
That should see Hazard return to his favoured role on the left side of a front three, and Sarri wants more from the man voted the second best player at last year's World Cup.
"In this moment, he's more an individual player than a leader," said Sarri on Wednesday.
"He is very important for us, of course, because he is a great player. He always can win the match in two minutes. Sometimes in one minute. But, at the moment, he's not a leader."
Hazard's future is also a source of fevered speculation, with the player refusing to extend his current Chelsea deal, which expires in 2020.
In an interview with France Football this week Hazard again raised the possibility he could move to Real Madrid and admitted he has frustrated all of his previous coaches.
"I think he said that coaches told him that he needs to do more," added Sarri.
"I think he has to do more. Because the potential is higher than the performances. He has to respect first of all himself. He has to do more."
And Sarri also acknowledged that Hazard's desire to get on the ball as much as possible has restricted his impact when playing in a central role.
"Eden is at the moment a wonderful player, but an individual player. He is an instinctive player so for him it is difficult to play in only one position.
"He likes very much to go to the ball so for him, I think it is very difficult to play as a striker."
Sarri's public reaction to the defeat at Arsenal has raised questions over his future at Stamford Bridge just six months into his reign in charge.
Chelsea, who are fourth in the Premier League, host Tottenham in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final on Thursday, trailing 1-0 from the first leg.

Football: Zidane vague on Bale's future after scrappy win over Eibar

Football: Zidane vague on Bale's future after scrappy win over Eibar

MADRID (AFP) - Zinedine Zidane refused to guarantee Gareth Bale's future at Real Madrid after the Welshman struggled again in a 2-1 victory over Eibar on Saturday (April 6).
Karim Benzema scored twice at the Santiago Bernabeu as Madrid came from behind after Marc Cardona, starting only after an injury to Pedro Leon in the warm-up, gave Eibar a surprise lead.
But Madrid improved and a pair of Benzema headers ensured the groans and whistles that had soured the atmosphere for much of the opening hour turned to cheers and applause at the end.
Much of the frustration was again directed at Bale, who started here after being dropped by Zidane for the defeat to Valencia on Wednesday.
Asked afterwards if Bale would be at Real Madrid next season, Zidane said: "We'll see, I'm not going to tell you what's going to happen. Gareth is a Real Madrid player, he has two years left on his contract. We will see. It is not the time to talk about this."
Bale's below-par performances and a lack of support from either coach or fans seem so inter-linked now, it is difficult to know what comes first.
He departed again to whistles with 14 minutes left, a conciliatory hand slap from Zidane offering little consolation as he trudged off.
Benzema's trajectory has been the opposite, the Frenchman now with six goals in five La Liga games, four of them since Zidane took over.
"Karim has had a great season," Zidane said.
"His goals have perhaps changed people's perception of him. But he has never changed as a player."
Madrid's win means they are 10 points adrift of leaders Barcelona and two behind Atletico Madrid. Barca and Atletico play each other later on Saturday. Eibar stay 11th.
Zidane has insisted his players are not on trial but his changing line-ups at least suggest he is examining his options before the summer.
This time, Sergio Ramos was rested, while Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Lucas Vazquez also dropped out. In came Nacho, Federico Valverde, Isco and Bale.
Bale's half began badly as he failed to control Valverde's overhit pass and then got worse as he missed a one-on-one when his finish was saved by Marko Dmitrovic.
CHORUS OF WHISTLES
The scattering of whistles became a chorus after he dragged a shot wide from 25 yards and it was no surprise his confidence drained away, a poor touch following shortly after.
Bale was not the only one. Madrid lacked precision or purpose, as opponents were allowed through unchecked and passes went astray.
In the 39th minute, as the fans' frustration was reaching its peak, Eibar scored, a crisp move down the left ending with a cute pass from Gonzalo Escalante to Cardona, who chipped into the net.
The second half started better for Madrid, with Benzema scoring only to be called back for offside before the Frenchman headed in the equaliser just before the hour. Marco Asensio did brilliantly to weave into space and dig out the cross.
Bale might have been in but Asensio's pass struck the back of his heel and the Welshman departed with 14 minutes left, to disgruntled whistles.
Madrid scored the winner without him. Kroos' whipped cross was again met by the forehead of Benzema and, again, the ball found the net.
Benzema should have completed his hat-trick late on but one finish was palmed away by Dmitrovic and another, with the goal gaping, looped over. He even hit the post with a bending effort in injury-time. The treble was not to be.

Football: Leicester City manager Rodgers recounts 'horrendous' ordeal for family after break-in

LONDON (AFP) - Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers spoke on Thursday (March 7) of his family's "horrendous" ordeal after their home in Scotland was broken into while they were sleeping.
Police were called to the property near Glasgow in the early hours of Wednesday.
His wife and stepdaughter, Charlotte and Lola, were in the house and a number of items were stolen but nobody was injured.
Rodgers, 46, left Parkhead last week to take over at former Premier League champoins Leicester, sparking anger among some Celtic fans.
"For the girls to have someone come into the room, it's horrendous really," Rodgers said at his pre-match press conference.
"I just made sure they are secure up there. We are looking to buy a house here in Leicester and they will move down very soon.
"When I got the call in the early hours of the morning you're worried about their safety. The reaction from lots of people has been great. We've been given great support.

"It's not nice for any family to go through. It gave the girls a fright. The last 10 days there's been a lot around my move to here but I don't want it to detract from an amazing time we had as a family in Scotland."
Police in Scotland confirmed an investigation was under way, with Rodgers losing several of his medals.
"Yeah, I'll have to try to get some more," he said.
Rodgers is preparing for his first home game in charge against struggling Fulham on Saturday.
He suffered a last-minute defeat in Sunday's 2-1 loss at Watford in his first game at the helm.
Rodgers added: "All games are very difficult to forecast. People will look at chunks of five games and think 'right, you can get points here' but you never know what the other team is going to bring to the game.
"Scott (Parker) has come in and Fulham had a good performance last week, so he will want to continue with that this weekend."
