Griezmann calls time on Atletico stay as move to Barcelona looms

MADRID • French striker Antoine Griezmann has told Atletico Madrid he will leave them in the close season, the Spanish club said on Twitter on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old has a contract until 2023 with Atletico, but has a buy-out clause of €120 million (S$183.9 million) and has been the target of several approaches from LaLiga rivals Barcelona.
"Antoine Griezmann has told the club he will not continue as a Rojiblanco (red and white, the club's colours) next season," the club said.
Within a few moments, the 2018 World Cup winner then posted a video explaining himself.
"After speaking with Cholo (club coach Diego Simeone), then with (chief executive) Miguel Angel and the people in the hierarchy I wanted to speak with you, the fans, who have always given me a lot of love," said Griezmann.
"I wanted to tell you I have taken the decision to leave. I have had five wonderful seasons here and you will always be in my heart.
"The truth is, it has been difficult to take this route but it is what I feel I need and I would like to thank all of you for the love you have shown me during these five years."

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
It's difficult to say no to teams like Barca. (But) when you're shown love at home, you don't go elsewhere. They did everything possible to make me feel good, including bringing in important players and building a great team.
ANTOINE GRIEZMANN, in a TV documentary named The Decision last year, explaining why he stayed at Atletico.

TIME TO LEAVE HOME
I have had five wonderful seasons here and you (the fans) will always be in my heart. The truth is, it has been difficult to take this route but it is what I feel I need and I would like to thank all of you for the love you have shown me during these five years.
GRIEZMANN, telling fans why he has decided to leave.

With 133 goals in 252 games at Atletico, he has rarely been unfit or injured. The Frenchman was a Champions League runner-up in 2016, losing to rivals Real Madrid. Last year, he scored two goals to help Atletico beat Marseille in the Europa League final.
He finished third in the voting for the Ballon d'Or in 2016, after France lost to Portugal in the European Championship final and was a huge presence as Les Bleus romped to a memorable World Cup win at Russia 2018 after which he also finished third in the Ballon d'Or votes.
He rejected an offer from Barca last June, documenting his internal struggles about whether to make the move in a documentary called The Decision, produced by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's Kosmos production company.
The last contract he signed initially raised his release clause to €200 million but that figure will drop to €120 million on July 1.
Griezmann's departure may signal an exodus at Atletico. France defender Lucas Hernandez agreed to join Bayern Munich when they paid his €80 million release clause and long-serving captain Diego Godin's contract is coming to an end.

LONDON (AFP) - Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha has been given a one-match ban by the Football Association for improper conduct after sarcastically applauding referee Andre Marriner.
Zaha was punished following his antics in Palace's Premier League draw at Southampton on Jan 30.
The Ivory Coast forward clapped Marriner after being booked for a clash with Southampton's James Ward-Prowse and was subsequently sent off after earning a second yellow card for his show of dissent.
The 26-year-old will not serve the suspension immediately as he can decide whether he wants to appeal against the decision, making him available for the home match against West Ham this weekend.
"Wilfried Zaha has been suspended for one match following an independent regulatory commission hearing yesterday. He was also fined £10,000," an FA statement said on Thursday (Feb 7).
"The suspension is not currently effective whilst the player considers his right of appeal.
"The Crystal Palace forward accepted a charge of improper conduct, which followed his behaviour after a second-half dismissal during the game against Southampton on Jan 30, 2019."
Zaha had already missed his side's 2-0 win over Fulham last Saturday as he served an initial one-match suspension for his red card, making his new ban an additional punishment.

Ex-Barca great Xavi to go into coaching

Ex-Barca great Xavi to go into coaching

DOHA • Former Barcelona and Spain great Xavi Hernandez will retire from football at the end of the season to move into coaching, calling time on a trophy-laden career spanning two decades.
The former Barca captain, who made an all-time record of 767 appearances for the Spanish champions while winning 133 caps for Spain, confirmed he would be hanging up his boots in an open letter sent to members of the Spanish media on Thursday.
The statement read: "This is my last season as a player, but I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for me as a coach.
"It has been a privilege to play football until 39 years of age and now, I would like to finish the season on a high by winning the Emir Cup and getting to the next phase of the Asian Champions League."
Revealing that his coaching style would reflect the way he was known for playing the game, he added: "I love seeing teams take the initiative on the field, play attacking football and return to the essence of what we all love from our childhood days - possession football."
Xavi made his debut for Barcelona in 1998 after coming through the club's famed La Masia academy and soon became the heartbeat of the team's midfield, winning eight LaLiga titles and four Champions League crowns before joining Qatari side Al Sadd in 2015.
He was one of the key players when Spain won their first and only World Cup in 2010 as well as their European Championship triumphs in 2008 and 2012, before eventually retiring from the national team after their early 2014 World Cup exit.
Last month, he helped Al Sadd win the Qatar Stars League, the country's top flight, while the team have also progressed to the quarter-finals of the Emir Cup.
His former teammates and clubs also paid tribute after news of his impending retirement broke, with Barcelona hailing him as a "football legend" on their Twitter account.
Andres Iniesta, who combined with Xavi to become one of the game's greatest double acts, called him "the best partner".
The midfielder, who now plays for J-League outfit Vissel Kobe, tweeted: "A privilege to grow and share at your side all my career and the best moments. Thank you for everything you've taught the world of football."

Football: Dangerous Yangon can hurt leaders Tampines Rovers in AFC Cup, warns Kadir Yahaya

SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers could seal passage to the Asean zone semi-finals of the AFC Cup with a win over Yangon United at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday (May 1), but Stags head coach Kadir Yahaya has warned his charges to be wary of their Myanmarese opponents.
Tampines lead Group F with 10 points, three ahead of Vietnam's Ha Noi FC. Cambodian side Nagaworld and Yangon have three points apiece, but Nagaworld are third ahead of Yangon because of a better head-to-head record. Each team have played four matches.
Yangon are all but out of the running for a place for the knock-off stages - they will not win Group F and are unlikely to finish as the best second-placed team among the three Asean groups - which makes them a threat, according to Kadir.
At the pre-game media conference at the Corpthorne King's Hotel on Tuesday, the former Singapore international said: "They have nothing to lose, and so the danger we are facing is that they are playing with no objective.
"They can attack at will, and for us it is important to remain calm, and keep our shape and composure."
The caution that Kadir is showing comes after his team left it till late before beating Nagaworld 4-2 in their last AFC Cup game on April 17. The Stags were expected to rout the visitors, but were held at 1-1 until the dying minutes.
"We expected their (Nagaworld's) fast counter attacks, and there were some lapses in concentration on our part which resulted in them equalising (to make it 1-1)," said Kadir, who added that his team's experienced stars like Khairul Amri and Daniel Bennett would be key against Yangon.
"Credit to the players, they kept fighting and eventually we got the goals and result we wanted."
Tampines are hoping for some respite in the AFC Cup after a poor run in the Singapore Premier League (SPL), where they are winless in their last four games .
Kadir believes that squad rotation - essential when competing in the AFC Cup - affects the team's consistency, and pointed to how Home United also suffered domestically during their run to the Asean zone crown in 2018, and how the Protectors posted stronger results in the SPL after the group stage of the AFC Cup.
Home won just two of their first seven SPL games last term, but then won 10 of their next 17 matches to finish second.
Yangon coach Myo Min Tun said he is expecting a tough night for his charges, especially with first-choice goalkeeper Kyaw Zin Htet (illness) and Guinean striker Sekou Sylla (suspension) out for the game.
"Tampines have many good and skilful individual players, like the two wingers (Ryutaro Megumi and Jordan Webb)," noted the 35-year-old, who scored for Myanmar against Singapore in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup.
"Tomorrow will be very difficult for us, but we will do our best to challenge and show our level and our team's playing style."

Football: Mario Balotelli posts goal celebration video on social media mid-match

PARIS (AFP) - Mario Balotelli showed off a new goal celebration on Sunday (March 3) as he took a selfie video with his Marseille teammates and posted it on social media during their 2-0 win over Saint-Etienne.
The Italian scored his fourth goal in six Ligue 1 games since joining Marseille from Nice in January by hooking home Florian Thauvin's 12th-minute corner with an excellent acrobatic volley.
"Balotelli takes the pressure, he takes the limelight. He reminds me of (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic and he scored an Ibrahimovic goal," said Saint-Etienne coach Jean-Louis Gasset.
"He has brought back the public, the confidence, and many of his teammates will raise their level of play."
As he celebrated his volley, Balotelli took a phone from the cameraman behind the goal before filming the video with his laughing teammates and posting it on his Instagram story.
The 28-year-old then carried on playing.
He was not the first player to produce a selfie-based celebration, after Roma great Francesco Totti took a picture of himself after scoring against Lazio in the capital-city derby in 2015.
Marseille doubled their advantage nine minutes later through a Thauvin penalty and closed out the win with ease.
Rudi Garcia's men have now taken 13 points from their last five league matches to leapfrog Saint-Etienne into fourth, just five points adrift of Lyon in the race for the third and final Champions League spot.

Hwang saves South Korea, China off to winning start

Hwang saves South Korea, China off to winning start

DUBAI • Hwang Ui-jo scored nine goals to usurp his more illustrious compatriot Son Heung-min in South Korea's 2018 Asian Games gold-winning campaign.
In the absence of the Tottenham Hotspur star, the Gamba Osaka man turned out to be the hero again yesterday, scoring the winner as the Asian Cup contenders toiled to a 1-0 Group C opening win over debutants Philippines despite having over 80 per cent of the ball.
The in-form Son, with nine goals in 10 games for Spurs, will join the team after the Premier League match with Manchester United, meaning he would be available only for the final game against China.
Philippines coach Sven-Goran Eriksson had promised to give the Asian powerhouses a fight and the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-finalists nearly scored first. Korea, the 2015 runners-up who are hoping to win their first Asian Cup since 1960, were indebted to Kim Seung-gyu.
The goalkeeper dived to his right to deny Javier Patino in the 54th minute before Hwang scored the winner 13 minutes later.
In the other Group C game, a double goalkeeping blunder helped China come from behind to beat the 91st-ranked Kyrgyzstan 2-1.
The Central Asians bossed the first half on their Cup debut and forced Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi into introducing a 24th-minute substitute, Yu Dabao, who turned out to be the match-winner.
While they deservedly led 1-0 at the break after Akhlidin Israilov's rasping strike, they were undone by their goalkeeper Pavel Matiash. First, he palmed the ball into his net shortly after half-time. Then he was caught in no-man's land before he was rounded by Beijing Guoan forward Yu 12 minutes from the end.
Lippi was "enormously unhappy" about the 76th-ranked China's first half, saying: "I thought if we keep playing like that, we're going to lose. The goalkeeper's error, it's very lucky. After that, we created many chances, I am proud of what we showed in the second half. "
Meanwhile, Thailand sacked coach Milovan Rajevac seven hours after Sunday's 4-1 loss to India.
The Serb was already under pressure going into the quadrennial tournament. Last month, he failed in the defence of the country's Asean title, albeit with a weakened team, losing to Malaysia in the semi-finals on the away-goals rule.
Assistant coach Sirisak Yodyathai was appointed as acting coach, with Group A games against Bahrain (on Thursday) and host United Arab Emirates to come.
Football Association of Thailand president Somyot Poompanmoung said: "Like all Thai football fans, I am also disappointed with the result. But, as the FA president, I cannot stand still with this problem."
Rajevac, 65, was hired in April 2017 to replace Kiatisuk Senamuang after spells with Qatar and Algeria.
He was best known for guiding Ghana to the last eight of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and was voted the confederation's Coach of the Year.
But his pragmatism, preferring to counter attack at times, has won few fans, who want to see a more attacking Thailand instead of a direct style with long balls.
Ironically, India were able to hit them on the counter repeatedly in the second half and scored thrice.
Former Socceroo Robert Cornthwaite tweeted: "The Thai fans and media wanted to see a more attacking side but at what cost? Lost their defensive stability and already conceded twice inside 50 minutes."
Thailand, appearing for the first time since co-hosting the Cup in 2007, have now won just one of 21 games at the continent's showcase competition.
